Rank the tank

Post#1 » by jazzfan1971 » Wed Jul 17, 2013 7:53 am

I thought we'd have a bit of an inverted power ranking. Where the crappier your team is the better you rank.

I'll throw my .02 in, but, I'm not as familiar with EC teams so might be a bit off.

Smells like tank spirit
--------------------------
Philly
Phoenix
Bobcats
Utah Jazz

Those 4 teams look like bottom dwellers to me. Jazz probably bringing up the 4th spot, with teh other 3 duking it out for #1.

The also tanked
------------------------
Boston
Lakers
Bucks
Orlando
Sacramento Kings

These teams look like the next rung to me. I know a lot of folks wont like seeing teams like the Celtics and Lakers here with the Kings. And I know the Bucks are going to try and make the playoffs. Still, looking at those rosters and taking my best guess, this is the next group.

The why tank when you can treadmill?
------------------------
Dallas
Toronto
Pelicans
Denver
Timberwolves

The problem with this rung is it ignores any conference complications. Just ranking them as I see them on talent. My appologies to the nuggets. It's hard to win 57 games one year then be slotted to be a lotto team by some idiot's power ranking, yet that's how I see it. I'll also apologize to the Raptors. They'll probably make the playoffs and not get any lotto balls. But, that doesn't mean I don't see them as the 11th worst team in the league anyway. Prove me wrong.

So, now that you've scoffed at my list, let's see who you got winning the tank.

Tank of all tanks:
Magic, Sixers, Suns, Bobcats

Next:
Kings, Celtics

Last playoffs spot/Not really tanking:
Bucks, Raptors, Lakers, Blazers, Mavs, Jazz (?)

And i wouldn't really consider Pelicans and Wolves treadmilling teams. Both actually have good talent and will only improve their wins every season going forward, not something i associate with treadmill teams.

This topic has been brought up before, but it will be a consistent theme all season:

There is a difference between the worst teams, and the teams openly "tanking" the season. Some of the teams will be worst than the teams trying to be bad.

Openly Tanking teams (in order of obvious intent):

1. 76ers
2. Suns
3. Celtics
4. Magic
5. Jazz
6. Raptors

Non tanking terrible teams:

1. Kings
2. Bobcats
3. Bucks

I resented the implications that the Jazz were deliberately tanking. I figured they were running with teh kids and whatever veterans they picked up as salary dumps.

Then we signed John Lucas III.

I am soooo ashamed

There is only 1 thing I know as a Nets fan and that is this. If your honestly interested in getting a top level draft pick through tanking, there is only one man for the job...

Philly, Phoenix, Utah, Orlando, Charlotte, and Sac would look to be the bottom 6 to me. Sac could break away from the pack and Charlotte as well leaving a top 4 of:

Utah
Philly
Phoenix
Orlando

2-3 teams planning(?) to start rookie pg's (Wall with the Wizards was still terrible), and Phoenix who has Beasley. Really at that point its going to be guessing who has less awful on any given night, so getting an ordering would be tough. Maybe Orlando keeps Jameer starting and plays their vets, if so they break out next and I think we have a 3 horse race between Philly Utah and Phoenix. I actually think Utah is the frontrunner.

Atlanta Hawks - perhaps not among the worst tankers but certainly within reach, maybe 'the also tank'......or am i missing a couple of game changing veterans on their roster that others are seeing.
TGibson (1/28/17); "..."a 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 10 for drama"...What's the worst? "...yelling matches with Thibs, everybody is just going crazy and I'm just sitting there...like, 'Don't call my name please..."

Philly traded an All star for a Rookie who wont play a game for 3/4ths of the year
Let Bynum/Young walk

Im pretty sure any team led by Turner/Hawes is taking the piss

Not only on-court they have it stitched up, They have brought in Royce White to distract and bring attention to off-court drama's

The only "true" tanking team is Celtics. Those guys could lose games on purpose.

Letting Nick Young go isn't exactly a statement about trying to lose games. He is Nick Young.

(Also Philly still has Thad Young who was their best player last year)

Right now I have the 76ers as the #1 tanking team, but the Celtics are right on their heels. The minute they give away Rondo, they take over the top spot.
Tanking is nothing new to the Celtics. It's in their DNA of the last two decades. They 'tanked' in '96 to try to get Duncan. They "tanked" in '06 to try to get Durant or Oden. In '06, it was obvious that they were losing games on purpose, down the stretch, to solidify their chances. If there is going to be a "tanking" contest this year, Danny Ainge and the Celtics will be hard to beat.

Obviously the offseason isn't over yet but I don't think the Celtics can be "tanking" with the talent they still have.

Rondo-Bradley-Green-Sullinger-Humphries isn't a bad lineup, especially with G Wallace, C Lee, M Brooks, and K Olynyk, off the bench. Assuming everyone is healthy I see no reason that they can't contend for that 8 spot in the playoffs with Cleveland. The East is pretty weak, with Rondo and Green the Celtics have a shot.

Now I completely agree that if Rondo sits out for a while "rehabbing" and Sully "injures" his back again and misses a lot of time then yes, we're tanking but until then I refuse to believe that we can't contend for a playoff spot. Even in '06 when we tanked it was because Pierce got hurt and beyond him we were just a bad team. Near the end yes we didn't care anymore but the season didn't start off as a tank, it ended up that way because our superstar went down. No different than if Kobe had gone down that year the Lakers would've tanked.

If you really want to tank and do it the right way, then someone needs to brting back and hire the guy who wrote the book on it "The Art of Tanking". Don Nelson.

Tankin' it up:
Sixers, Suns, Magic, Jazz

Not quite tanking yet, but talk to the GM at the trade deadline and their best vets are up for grabs:
Kings, Celtics?, Raptors, Bucks

Not even really tanking, just not gonna be good
Bobcats, Pelicans, Dallas, Portland

On a positive note, improved teams/young up and comers/6-8 seeds that can pull out of the treadmill:
Wolves, Wizards?, Cavs (healthy Bynum)

I have no earthly idea what to do with Denver or Detroit right now.

Treadmill 4 life.

11th worst? That's a compliment. Should be lower

Philly is tanking hard. They dropped that team into the Mariana trench with that draft day trade.

I guess if you going to tank be the best at it.
