I've never been an MJ fan, but I'm willing to accept I may not be the most objective...
As a laker fan, when we'd play a nationally televised game, we'd get some ex Celtics or Knicks broadcasters and all we'd hear about was how great Bird was... And Bird was great... I think he may have been the toughest competitor I ever saw, and he had a beautiful shot... But he was no where near as well rounded or athletic as Magic...
Then when Bird was on his way out, we started hearing about MJ... Even though Magic was winning MVPs and stuff, the hype almost skipped him because he wasn't in the East... And kind of like LeBron, before MJ had done anything real significant, he was already "Air Jordan" and the best in the league... Then he started winning championships and it was all over...
Until he'd gone on that 3-Peat tear, I'd just thought of him as a Glorified DrJ...
The high flying dunks that everyone was falling over seemed tired and done. But he kept winning...
The thing that I think nobody really likes to talk about was that MJ was the darling of the league... The Face of the NBA and for several seasons, he could literally do no wrong... Even to the point of retiring to play half-assed baseball... Everyone still loved him... And he got calls no one has seen since... There were games where he was literally untouchable... It seemed like defenses couldn't breath on him without an +1.
Kobe saw a little of that to before Colorado... But coupled with the fact that a lot of the power players in the NBA were in Rebuild mode, the league litterally started to look like professional wrestling there for a while...
So MJ has the stats to be greatest ever... He won the games and depending on who you ask and when you ask them, he did it all by himself... But I've never seen him do anything that fired me up the same way many of Magics performances did. In fact I think MJ was asked at one point after he retired who he thought the greatest ever was, and I think he said Magic... Obviously MJ, like Bird, always thought he could beat anyone he played against, but I still thought it was high praise. In fact, I'm pretty sure Bird said the same thing...
