These are the same people who think sports arenas will solve Detroit's several municipal problems, it's dwindling population, and the city council that operates as if it's high on PCP and cocaine. As I said before, sports fans can be some of the dumbest people around.

No one EVER came close to saying that simply moving the PIstons to downtown Detroit would make us some sort of super LA or NY. No one here believes that. No one here claimed that simply moving the Pistons to downtown Detroit would fix the economy. People merely said it would help. No one thinks that all Detroit's economy needs to flourish is 4 sports teams and some casinos, so idk why you're saying that.
zeebneeb wrote:I am only one example, but if the Pistons moved to Detroit, I would absolutely not, under any circumstances go to a game there. I have my reasons(they should be obvious)but I feel many also would not go to downtown Detroit to see a Pistons game.
You are only one example, and I'm sure that all the people at the Tigers, Red Wings and Lions games would disagree with you. I've been to Detroit several times recently and there's great parts of it. This idea that the entire thing is an awful, ugly, dangerous mess is a misconception that has been perpetuated by people who've never been there, or haven't been to the right parts of it.
zeebneeb wrote:So the obvious counter argument is that many who cant go see a game, would now go because they are closer to them, right? Detroit is a poor city, with a massive unemployment rate. Those closest, would be the ones most unable to afford to go see them. If you leave Auburn hills, you leave the money.
The unemployment rate is so high because people aren't frequenting the place except for things like sports events. There just aren't that many people there to spend money. When you create a situation where people with money can come in and spend it helps with jobs. After sports games in Detroit people will usually go get food, go to a bar, etc. Do you think that if we took all the sports teams away that wouldn't hurt those places that people frequent after games? Obviously they would be hurt, and if they can be hurt by less people coming in the obviously they can be further helped by more people coming in. More money/people coming in means they'll (most likely) need to hire more people to help with the demand. This is how you help get a bad economy going again. You create jobs for the people which allows them to spend more money than before which helps out whatever places they visit.
As for the "Leaving Auburn Hills = no money" part: I suppose that's why the Red Wings, Tigers and Lions all have almost no fan support and are on the verge of bankruptcy, right? Oh, wait a minute...
Zeebneeb wrote:Detroit has a very long road ahead of itself, and until the crime rate comes down to non third-world levels, is out of bankruptcy, the city council is gutted, the police force has response times lower then 2HOURS, a dispatch system that works, actual ambulances that work, and WILL SHOW UP, why in the **** would I go to a city that has the highest crime rate, the slowest police response times, emergency vehicles that will NOT show up, to watch a Pistons game? What if something happens? I just bleed out in the street while walking to my car?
I'm not sure if you've ever been to a sports game in downtown Detroit (my guess would be a resounding no) but you need to chill. Your perpetuating the fears and perceptions portrayed onto Detroit by the people that have never been there and just heard all the crap about it. How many people do you hear about getting shot after sporting games? I don't know if I've EVER heard about someone getting attacked after a sports game.
zeebneeb wrote:The Pistons are the keystone, the lynchpin, the team of destiny holding the city back from its great rebirth.
Once again: WHO EVER SAID THAT SIMPLY MOVING THE PISTONS TO DETROIT WOULD COMPLETELY FIX THE CITY?! I don't think you understand how economies work because you keep talking about how we have no population or jobs but then act as though more money coming through won't help. You know why we have no jobs? Because no one is there to spend money. From a macroeconomic standpoint, an economy needs a large percentage of people spending money, and spending money frequently for it to be successful. When there's no one there to spend money, jobs dry up, people lose their jobs and have less money so they spend less, causing more jobs to get lost and the cycle perpetuates itself until the economy is dead.
If you bring in more people, who spend money and (if enough people come in and spend) create a demand situation then the workplaces need more things that they're selling or people to work for them. Then those companies can hire more people, helps create more jobs so people can actually get a job living in Detroit.
Apparently people here don't read past "help Detroit" so I'm going to put this part in bold. I am in no way saying moving the Pistons to Detroit will fix the city. No one believes that. But to complain about the population and economy while saying that doing something to increase the number of people who go through there will do nothing to help is just ridiculous.
