Hawks fans, you are going to adore Gustavo Ayon. He's a very smart and capable defender who can spell big minutes for Al Horford and Elton Brand. His presence was felt tremendously with Team Mexico during FIBA Americas.
To give you an idea of how good Ayon is, I took Prevention notes. Preventions is a up-and-coming statistic I created that will be used to help determine a player's effectiveness on defense by using points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals as lost value (or "cash left on the table"). I am still working on how preventions are to be read, but below is a great indicator. I used the FIBA Finals game between Mexico and Puerto Rico to tabulate my findings.
Code: Select all
8 SHOTS CONTESTED
- Prevented 4 2-pointers (8 PTS)
- Prevented 4 3-pointers (12 PTS) (Including a contested shot from JJ Barea in 4th Q)
2 SHOTS BLOCKED
- Prevented 2 2-pointers (4 PTS) (One of which became a Block Of The Game, see below)
11 SCREENS SET
- Prevented 11 steals (11 STL) (Also prevented 3 offensive fouls)
1 STEAL
- Prevented 1 possession (Had it been in the passing lane, Ayon would have also collected an assist prevention)
