It just makes zero sense to me for fans to be upset that the team is good.
Its not called being good, it's called being stuck in no man's land. Either your good enough to be competing in the playoffs annually....or you suck enough to get players who will eventually become good enough to lead the team to be competing in the playoffs annually.
Or you get stuck in the middle drafting players whose ceiling is probably as a role player. And the Suns still need more star power and need to draft more players with star potential before signing expensive free agents. Unless those free agents are established stars themselves ofcourse but I don't see any of them rushing to PHX unless there is someone to team up in PHX with or we have to overpay.
This coming draft supposedly provides a great opportunity to draft that star player who can lead us to be competing in the playoffs so why wouldn't we take advantage of that instead of being stuck in no man's land?
I fully agree that getting a high pick in next year's draft may be highly beneficial, and if we manage to land a great player then I'll be ecstatic.
But if we manage to get enough wins to just miss the playoffs, then that might be even better. It would mean that our core at the moment works extremely well. Then instead of getting a draft pick which may be a bust, we could get a star player who is already established in the league.
I think you're not looking hard enough if you think that the only options are playoffs or tanking. Look at Houston. Since Yao retired and they entered rebuild mode, they didn't have a single pick in the top 10. And now look at them. Harden last year, Dwight now. And they are potential contenders for the title. None of that was through the draft.
I'm just saying in the end, I'll be happy with whatever happens this season, unless the team has no chemistry at all.
Which star player that's already established in this league? Give some names who you think would join a Suns team that's #9-#10 seed in the West.
And it's better to suck to get more star players via draft where they want hurt our salary cap at opposed to overpaying on the free agency market. Look at what OKC did with Durant. They got Durant then absolutely sucked to get Westbrook. Then they sucked with Westbrook to get Harden. That's how they made it to the Finals last year.
Look at what GS did. Drafted Curry, then sucked and got Thompson then sucked and got Barnes and added Lee & Bogut as complimentary pieces and now they are a contender.
Clippers....drafted Gordon then sucked got Aminu, then sucked got Griffin and then used Gordon and Aminu in the trade to land CP3 who wanted to play in LAC cause of Griffin
.
Another example of a team that is rebuilding right now....the Cavaliers. Drafted Kyrie and then has sucked to get Benett, Thompson, Waiters etc.
One draft with high picks isn't enough to build a contender 98% of the time.
