Was going out of bounds in a vacuum a boneheaded play ... yes but you have to judge the whole play, also it is not like the game is over if he stays in bounds.

Is a 100 yard kick return for a TD a boneheaded play if the returner gets an unsportman like penalty for his endzone dance?

It doesn't take a non-bonehead to understand this very simple and correct logic. Bernman literally said he would have given Finley a piece of his mind in the locker room for the play in which he made the game winning catch lol smh. After Finley was done stomping-in berns face and brains bernman would have realized the difference between kuhns and mcmillains plays and Finleys...

But I do envy fans that dont nikpik at those things, they probably enjoy the game a lot more. Just like the shine on my shoes, ignorance is bliss.

Im sure u meant to say 'lack of awareness to STAY IN bounds'. But to be clear, it's not that I didn't notice that he went out of bounds when he should have stayed in, it's just that I think its crazy not to focus on the 'game winning reception' part of the play and instead on the 'not staying in bounds' part. It's not an ignorance situation at all (in fact I happened to have lost 500$ because of the play when Marion Barber went out of bounds in the bears-broncos game two years ago when tebow and the broncos went on to win in overtime), its more a glass half full vs half empty situation, or in the case of the Finley play today a glass 99% full vs 1% empty situation.

In the Barber play two years ago, it was f*cking horrible because Barbers ONLY important job was to stay in bounds and he failed, just like Mcmillains only job was to stay deep and Kuhns only important job was to not turn the ball over by touching it. But for Finley, 99 percent of what was important for the packers winning was for him to get the first down and he happened to get all the way down to the Ravens 20 yrd line. It's not nitpicking to say that u wanted to chew out Finley after that play he made to win the game, it's simply insanity and completely unabashed pessimism and Finley-hating. If Finley hadnt won the game on that reception I could see chewing him out, but he did win the game on that play and therefore the only rational response to that occurance is to be happy and congratulatory of Finley. Maybe nicely remind him to stay in bounds next time (but I mean dude, it's f*cking Jermichael Finley, he's not gonna remember for the next time anyway) and then give him a damn hug and tell him he's awesome for making a game winning play.

It can't be this hard to understand why I had a problem with what Bernman posted, I'm as critical as the next guy when criticism is due but when you're pissed off at a guy for the end of the play that won the damn game that's where u lose me...

This was my thought process as well. The only thing I cared about on that play was getting a first down. Staying in bounds would have been an added bonus

So then the packers kick a field goal leave the ravens 40 to 50 seconds to go say 80 yards which they just got done doing and did last year vs Broncos. It might be better to care sooner and win rather than later and lose, just sayin.

I'm talking about my perspective before the play was even snapped. Was anyone here thinking, "Whoever catches it better stay in bounds"? I wasn't. I was thinking we need 10 yards or we'll lose. What we're doing here is congratulating Finley on making a great play, but scolding him for not making the perfect play.

"Boneheaded" just seems like the wrong word to use. It doesn't belong in the category of giving up a 4th and 21 or Jeff Dodge not punting it out of bounds with 5 seconds left on the clock (Thank you btw)

LOL I read too fast and missed this. INSANITY! I agree!

I like this gem too though.

"Clearly one of the best regular-season games I've been a part of," said McCarthy. "You hate to say the best.

Not sure what the point of ur post here is but I do hope u did pick up on the fact that there was a reason this was being discussed in this thread before u jumped into the discussion and that this comment wasn't referring to anything that u posted...

Sneakerdust and before him Bernman are/were trying to act like we dont comprehend that Finley going out of bounds there was a dumb move. We get perfectly well that it was a dumb move, that's not at all the point we're making. come to think of it they're overlooking the point of our posts just like Finley overlooked that he needed to stay in bounds at the end of his game winning catch and run. Some would call that boneheadedness. Some posters are so eager to win an argument that they jump on and continue to argue a winning point even if the person they are arguing with isn't and hasn't ever been disputing that particular point. Obliviousness ftl. The fact is I never disputed that Finley going out of bounds was dumb. It was. It's just that Bern tried to put his game winning play in the category of Kuhn and Mcmillians horrible mistakes in the game and even said he would have given them all, including Finley, a piece of his mind in the locker room. Ridiculous.

I think the whole point is his play didnt win the game specifically because he didnt go out of bounds and Finley owns up to this:

"After he completed his 52-yard reception by going out of bounds at the Baltimore 21, tight end JermichaelFinley quickly understood his mistake.

His impressive catch-and-run on third and 3 at the Packers 27 with 1 minute 53 seconds left practically sealed the game. All the Packers needed to do was get one more first down, which running back Eddie Lacy got on third and 2 at the Baltimore 13.

However, Finley could have made it easier on the Packers if he had fallen to the turf and not gone out of bounds because it stopped the clock and allowed the Ravens to hang on to one of their two remaining timeouts.

"At the point you have to use your football sense," Finley said. "At the same time, it's still a two-point game so in my mind it's not clicking, how much time is left? I'm just trying to be the athlete that I am and make a play."

Finley said his eyes lit up when he saw the Ravens were going to try to cover him with Elam and that Elam was playing outside leverage on him. Finley wanted to go inside on the route so all he had to do was give him a quick shake move and he was open over the middle."

He knew he made a mistake. I know he made a mistake. But by focusing on his mistake instead of the fact that he made a 50+ yard reception that, just as the article u quoted explicitly says, "practically sealed the game" for the packers, u are making MY point. Focus on a tough road road victory. If u feel like taking a more negative tack by all means focus on Kuhn and mcmillains mistakes if u like. Huge mistakes that almost cost us the game. Lay off poor Jermichael, that's all I'm asking, he won the damn game. We always have a hard time closing teams out and if not for Finleys catch we very well could have lost.
