Player position/archetypes
Point Guard (PG)
Combo Guard (PG/SG)
Shooting Guard (SG)
Swing Man (SG/SF)
Small Forward (SF)
Combo Forward (SF/PF)
Power Forward (PF)
What do I call them (PF/C)
Center (C)
Undersized center?
Mobile center?
Combo center?
Reluctant to call them "Finesse center" because Marc Gasol and Spencer Hawes have skills yet lack the quickness to defend the PF spot
PF
Dirk Nowitzki, Carlos Boozer, Taj Gibson, Brandon Bass, Paul Millsap, Udonis Haslem, Carl Landry, David West, Josh McRoberts
PF/C
Tim Duncan, Tiago Splitter, Pau Gasol, Al Horford, Chris Bosh, Kevin Garnett, Greg Monroe, Nene, Amare Stoudemire
C
Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, DeAndre Jordan, Marc Gasol, DeMarcus Cousins, Tyson Chandler, Brook Lopez, Nikola Pekovic, Nikola Vucevic, Roy Hibbert, Andrew Bogut, Jonas Valanciunas, Chris Kaman

Re: Player position/archetypes
That's not exactly descriptive, as centers are "big men".
I think I'm going with "Small Centers"

Forward Center. Tweener may also be applicable.

Re: Player position/archetypes
Ability to play both forward positions is usually called tweeners or cornermen or just plain forwards. Ability to play pf/center would be called forward/center pivotmen or just plain big man. Some players like Lebron/magic/Anthony Randolph/posey are called utility players/versatile/ or all around players

never thought I'd see the day Anthony Randolph would be in the same category as LBJ and Magic

Re: Player position/archetypes
It'd also be interesting to analyze what their roles are on. Both ends of the Court for the archetype and statistically what is produced for certain types who are successful and in combination with which other archetypes for team building

Re: Player position/archetypes
Those PF/C players are in the "Would be a Power Forward in the 80s/90s" category.

Re: Player position/archetypes
I think we should divide each position even further. For example, differentiate Combo Guards like Allen Iverson from others like Tyreke Evans. Also, divide SF positions into 3D, Point Forward, Slashing. Do the same with each position. I could probably elaborate more but I'm lazy and you guys probably know what I mean

Aldridge is a good example of one.

I think "pivotman" is right for the PF/C

What's in a name?
Honestly, why care? Positions are quite immaterial, it's all fluid these days. Players have roles, functions and traits. The spectrum of combination is virtually endless, you can't come up with a taxonomy that covers all of them.

I couldn't care less about positions if it weren't for fantasy basketball.

Related to a formula and scale I was devising for post offense and defense in NBA 2K14.
PFs like Paul Millsap are not posting up against Cs like Pekovic, but PF/Cs like Al Horford surely are. Conversely, a player like Horford could be guarded in the post by either Pekovic or Millsap.
That has an impact on their statistical production in this area.
