1. dwight howard was the best pick and roll big man in the league but refused to run it

Why is this suddenly all about Dwight now? We are discussing both Carmelo and Dwight, right? Or should we solely discuss Dwight, since he is most convenient for your argument.

The bottom line is, Dwight did not want to play the PnR. He wanted to be showcased just like he was in Orlando. The only reason D'Antoni was even willing to adjust last year was because he was pretty much forced to due to "politics" and how bad the team was performing running his traditional system. Your argument would be valid had MDA adapted from the beginning immediately when he took over for Brown.

The point Doc's trying to make (we've beaten it to death recently), Dwight was showcased in Orlando by almost exclusively running Pick and Rolls... Dwight has no post game... He's a face up PF that can't shoot. So he uses his quickness to get around his man and dunk. Now that he's lost a step and having numbness in his extremities, he's lost that ability. So now he can't get around a defender, shoot, or play back to the basket... He NEEEEEEEEEDS the Pick and Roll....

But Dwight refused to play it in LA... Refused.

You can't them blame D'Antoni for not wanting to acquiesce to Dwight wanting more posts ups when he's absolutely horrendous at it while being the best PnR big in the league. I'm sorry, but can you back this up? From everything I hear from Dwight ever since he joined Houston, he's been bragging about how the Houston roster is set up similarly to the Orlando team he had great success with. Why would he ever hate a system that set him up with so much success?

Regardless, the original argument has strayed away with this whole Dwight crap. It is not a good thing when a coach constantly has beef with his star players. Mike D is as stubborn as it comes, and that's a horrible quality to have as a head coach of a professional basketball team. I bet those people who don't mind that MDA feuded with Dwight are probably relativists who think the Lakers are better off without Dwight too.

This whole Dwight stuff was a pure mess anyways. What about the situation with Carmelo Anthony? Carmelo gets traded to NY and MDA is too stubborn to adjust his system for Melo. Instead of adjusting, he just chooses to quit on the team instead. What happens thereafter? That Knicks team becomes more successful with Woodson running the show. A coach who isn't stubborn and hard-headed would adjust to the roster presented to him. When SVG came to Orlando, he adjusted his system for Dwight and eventually reached the finals with him. MDA is a one-trick pony and it truly is a sad thing that while we had the best center in the league, we set him up with this guy as the head coach.

McHale and MDA, yes. They both like to run and gun, shoot plenty of three's, avoid post play. Mike D even brought up that point soon after Dwight bolted for Houston.

SVG's system was actually much more flexible. They played with more of an inside-out approach, didn't run nearly as much as the McHale and MDA system. Still lived and died by the trey, though.
