Report: Pistons shopping Stuckey/CV and "could act soon"

Post#1 » by Q00 » Wed Nov 20, 2013 7:04 pm

Finally, the Pistons are another slow-starting Eastern team, and league-wide speculation is they will try to move the expiring contracts of guard Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva in search of more talent. The Pistons could act soon, sources said.

The Pistons have had to rely on Stuckey of late with Chauncey Billups injured but Charlie Villanueva continues to man the end of the bench having played a total of just five minutes through the team’s first ten games. Stuckey is playing too important of a role to trade, especially right now but could Villanueva be on the move soon? Perhaps, if there is a team already looking to unload a functional player for salary cap relief next Summer.

While Amico’s sources used the word ‘soon’, these types of deals are more common closer to the trade deadline. Still, we shouldn’t be caught of guard if some trade news breaks.

Its no secret they've been shopping them all summer, but the news here is that it sounds like they could be close to a deal now.

Its worth noting that the report by Amico that is being cited was actually published a week ago and somehow went under the radar. So the Pistons could've changed their minds since then after winning two of the last three games. Or it could also mean they are even closer to making a deal now.

I wouldn't just trade Stuckey for nothing at this point. He's playing really good and is a expiring. I would hold out till the deadline and see what kind of offers we get then. Charlie V can leave at anytime though.

Dumars is probably looking to trade for Asik, so they can start a line-up of Jennings, Smith, Monroe, Drummond and Asik. Because, you know, just put talent out there and it works, according to Joe.

stuckey for afflalo would make a lot of sense. the magic get rid of afflalos contract and the pistons get a above average starting SG

Where are all those people that wanted Stuckey to be amnestied? Just wanted him off the team at all costs and was willing to take NOTHING in return. Hmmmm....

Not sure this is news. Of course Joe would love to trade stuckey and CV for "more talent". Any GM would. The problem is that no other GM wants to give up "more talent".

And trade jennings for gay or something of that nature :/

Hence the part that says, "they could act soon, source said". As in they must have found some interested trade partners, or else there would be no reason to report that they could be acting soon. That's why its news, to me at least. I knew they were shopping them, but I didn't expect them to make any trade this early.

If that part is true it indicates we have some interest in the expirings.

It doesn't necessarily mean we have a good offer actively on the table though.

Or, like the other 99% of rumors, it is complete speculation with an unnamed "source" tossed in at the end.

The pistons have been playing things very close to the chest since Gores took over. All of the major moves have gone down without anyone in the press having any idea they were coming.

I don't see it. Stuckey is playing well for us now, and Dumars needs to make the play-offs this year to save his job. Only way I could see it happen is if we were getting a not-living-up-to-his-contract star on a longer deal back in return for our expirings.

Stuckey and a healthy CV is actually what this team needs right now - a 1/2 guard for a three guard rotation with Jennings and KCP, and a stretch four.

A Three and D, dead eye three point shooter would be ideal who could play the 2/3 I guess. Afflalo would be mint I think, but would only be remotely available if Oladipo can't play the point and needs to play the 2-guard full time. But Orlando is looking to trade Jameer, so they must be happy with Oladipo at the point.

I personally have a hard time believing that Oladipo can or even will convert to full time PG, but that does make life more difficult. The thing is, it's tough to get a read on what the front office is thinking. They could want to trade Nelson just because he's already 31 and isn't going to help them by the time they're competing for something meaningful. They could just want to get value out of him while they can, while also improving the tank and forcing the young guys to play more. Or Oladipo could actually be turning into a viable starting point guard.

Obviously we want Oladipo to stay at SG so that we can get Afflalo back, but they could be looking to dump him for the same reasons as Afflalo. Still, it's hard to imagine that expiring contracts are their best offers. We'd have to add more value to get him.

Yeah, only way we move Stuckey is if we get a player who can actually help us right now. CV might get moved for anything though, because he just isn't contributing, and I suspect Joe believes he won't be getting anything out of CV this year besides a trade for his contract.

Assume we just move CV's contract for a moment - what could we be looking at in a return? It would have to be a player on a non-expiring deal for it to make any sense from their perspective, and to a non-contender because CV isn't going to play this year, so would be only a fit for the tanking teams also looking to free up salary for the free agent pool this off-season.

What we'd need in return is a three point assassin type, ideally a 2/3.

Who fits these criteria? Who are the tank teams with a SG/SF three point shooter assassin on a longer term deal who is looking to free up money/would be a FA destination draw?

I don't know how a team "could act soon" on a trade with no offers in place.

What's the contract situation of Aminu?

Answering my own question from above, Washington and Martell Webster would make some sense for us and could be available once Otto Porter is back healthy. That's about it though from my quick investigating, and Webster can't be traded until December 15th.

Trading Stuckey, unless it's for a legitimate asset for us going past this season, makes no sense.

If we trade Stuckey, we'll need a replacement guard, preferably one who plays both guard positions at a high level - and who is a high efficiency three point shooter. Otherwise we weaken ourselves pretty dramatically. For us to weaken ourselves, we better be getting a pretty high end draft pick or great young player buried on the bench behind some other great players.

Without a significant return, it makes more sense to keep Rodney, wait for either a better asset at the trade deadline, or just wait until the off-season to re-sign him or to use the contract space losing him opens up - all while making a needed playoff run this season.

Shumpert would be a dream IMO. He can handle the ball and was playing well before all the trade nonsense. Knicks are desperate and Stuckey has played very well.

Imagine a defensive lineup of

Shumpert, KCP, Smoove, Moose, Dre. With Brandon Shump and KCP we suddenly have great shooters.

Send them Kyle, stuck, and cv for bargs and shump.

Wilson Chandler?

He fits that criteria perfect. However, Denver finally started playing good once he came back, so unless they are looking to tank, its hard to see them trading him for CV. But yeah he would be perfect.

I wonder if this trade rumor is Joe not liking what he's seeing together from the trio up front, but knows he needs a better SF than Singler before he can move one of them to the bench. So he's looking to acquire one for his expirings.

Getting a Wilson Chandler would allow them to start Dre/Smith/Chandler and bring Moose off the bench without giving up any talent in the starting lineup.
