There is a really good chance that Detroit keep the pick

Post#1 » by No-Man » Wed Jan 8, 2014 7:08 pm

The NY teams and Cleveland look like they will end up as PO teams, Charlotte, Chicago and Detroit are the most likely teams to fall out of that picture right now.
Detroit roster is a mess, plus the pick is top8 protected.
The problem is being bad but, being better than Chicago/Boston/Charlotte could get you a 9th pick that you will deliver to Charlotte.
But I think is fair to say that Detroit has a really good chance to end up picking in the top8 again, when you are out of the PO being an East team you are automatically a top9 pick.
Detroit can benefit a lot from a pick in that range, even a guy with a low ceiling like Rodney Hood could fit perfectly in the Pistons, and if you are lucky... Jabari, Wiggins...
I will go for the tank at this point.

Thank you for your fact-less opinion, sir!

I hate that we have to be in the bottom 8 just to keep it. If it was top 12 protected, we'd be fine. If we came away with Gary Harris out of this draft, it would be great. We won't tank hard enough to get a top 3 pick, Detroit loves their meaningless victories at the end of the season.

Everything seems possible when the team is at its lowest moment.

This team will have another stretch of solid play at some point this season. It may or may not be enough to get us into the playoffs given the variables presented by other teams, but the odds of it causing us to drop enough to keep our pick is pretty tough. We'd need to not only miss the playoffs but be worse than at least one or two other eastern teams that miss as well, depending on how the bottom of the West shakes out in the end.

This is without taking into account that tanking will be a thing among teams later in the year, as it always is.

this team is simply too talented to finish in the bottom 8. they are playing some horrible basketball right now but things will even out.

I'm still sure they'll make the playoffs, just not as high a seed as some of us would have liked.

"some horrible" basketball is putting it lightly, they're playing worse than anyone else in the league. Worst 4th quarter team in the league, worst 3-point shooting team in the league, worst free throw shooting team in the league. The only thing they're above average at is offensive rebounding; which makes sense because they miss so many shots.

May the basketball gods have mercy on our souls. But seriously, if we lose tonight, i'll be 100% on the tank.

It's the Raptors, they've been straight balling lately ever since Gay got traded.

We'll lose this I'm sure.

This organization is in dire need of a hard reset.

Honestly we're too good to finish 8th or worst IMO... because we are trying to win... only way we have a chance to be bottom 8 is if Joe D trades away a few assets (such as Stuckey) and we start feeding KCP, Dre, and Monroe more shots. Let Dre develop his post game for the remainder of the season.

Most likely we are in the dreaded 7th - 10th range in the east... and that's the worst spot to be... no chance to win the first round and no draft pick for us..

Cheeks isn't the problem. The roster is the problem.

Folks, there are 3 possible scenarios here and out tanking the true tankers is not one of them.

A. We stay put and put this same roster on the floor. We miss the playoffs, but end up 10-14. Barring a miracle, CHA gets our pick and we have a failed season.

B. We trade Monroe for pennies on the dollar and get back a guy like Ariza. We now make the playoffs 9/10 times and end up from 5-8 seed. This is a short term move that I will be pissed about.

C. We trade Josh Smith for expirings/desperate teams. We probably scrap into the playoffs BUT we're left with cash to spend next summer.

At this point a Noah's Ark scenario is all that's left for us. Tank, keep Drummond and whoever we draft with the pick we'll likely wind up with. Keep the trainer and strength/conditioning coach.

Flood the rest (not literally, but you know).

Maybe keep KCP, try to execute a sign and trade with Monroe. Get whatever you can. Work the utmost to unload everyone else that's possible. Resign no-one. Fire the coach. Have the new coach bring his own people in. Let Dumars go. Have the new GM bring his own people in.

At this point I'm convinced NOTHING but a completely new culture will do for this team, and that means getting rid of basically everyone other than the essentials.

The rough thing about keeping our pick and hitting the reset button is it means losing a pretty damn good draft pick next year, though. At this point I can't help but feel like that could be a sacrifice that needs to be made. There's simply nothing to be done with a team that is so flawed from top to bottom.

We cant trade smith this year or we'll go on a winning streak like the raptors.

We really either need to be top 6 in the east to have a chance to win a playoff series... or be bottom 6 in the NBA to ensure we keep our lotto pick... anywhere in the middle is treadmill territory.

Worst place to be in the East this year is 7-8-9-10

Cleveland did just land Deng, who is a pretty solid SF... and losing lockerroom cancer Andrew Bynum could be good for them too... Cleveland is playing to win and could end up fighting for the 8th seed.

Also, won't be long and Boston will be getting Rondo back... who is easily their best player.

Only Milwaukee and Orlando are clearly worse than us right now.
