That's because the organization is such a mess they always spent money like a drunk sailor.
They didn't have capspace because they were idiots.Scalabrine wrote:The one year in the past 10 years the have had capspace the signed Amare Stoudemire, who did change the franchise and was one of the top 5 free agents in a free agency class that had LeBron, Wade, Bosh, Dirk, Joe Johnson, DLee, Pierce, etc...
Yeah, Amare was quite a steal.

Especially since nobody wanted to insure his contract.
He did lead the league in fire-estinguisher punching, though.Scalabrine wrote:Its not that players dont want to play/live in New York, its more the fact that they want to make money, and if the Knicks can offer the same money as another team, I still think most players would have them near the top of their lists.. they just never put themselves in position too... after next season they should have a lot of space in another big year in free agency.
Don't lie. New York could offer Lebron just as much money as Miami did.
Lebron just didn't want to go to NY because the Knicks incompetence is renowned (everyone knows except the Knicks fan base, apparently), and he wanted to win titles.
The guy who actually wanted the money (Melo) forced his way to NY, and the Knicks were dumb enough to sell the farm instead of telling him to wait till summer and signed him as a FA. If he cared about winning, he'd have given up a little money. But he didn't.
Well Amare at the time was an all star big man, one of the best scorers in the game, and had a great first season in New York. LeBron didnt decide against New York, if New York could have brought in Wade and Bosh with him then he would have signed with NY. Miami has the unique advantage of state income taxes, so while accepting less money, they are really making about the same as a maxed out Melo makes in NY, they also already had a star that was able to recruit prior to free agency... both major advantage. You missed my point though, Amare was one of the top free agents in that class, probably the best that didnt sign with Miami, and he chose NY. Yeah it hasnt worked out like we hoped, but at the time, he was a star.
Also, we did not give "the farm" for Melo. We swapped average point guards (Felton for Billups), and two young often injured players that now make about the same amount as Melo combined and play the same position. They would have been bench players! Splitting the 28 minutes at the 3/4 they would have gotten behind Melo/Amare. The biggest regrets so far in that deal was throwing in Mozgov and waiving Corey Brewer, I would love to still have both of them on the Knicks. Wilson Chandler is overpaid and wouldnt have been resigned had we signed Melo, and we will see how Gallinari is when he gets back but he would have been a backup on our team...
