Re: 2013-14 MVP Discussion Thread Pt II
Durant is posting 31 on 51 / 42 / 88 shooting. Throw in 8 board, 5 dimes, 2 steals and a block, and add that the Thunder have the 2nd best record in the league (36-10).
The MVP is KD's to lose at this point.

I'm surprised how close people in the media seem to have it between KD and LeBron.
A couple losses for OKC and I could see them jumping on LBJ's bandwagon. This head to head game is huge.

I take those defensive stats with a grain of salt. His opp. PPP and FG% are largely influenced by the fact that the Thunder is the second in the league in opp. FG% at the rim, which is much owed to Ibaka's ability to alter shots at the rim and Collison's splendid defensive awareness.

With the way media ppl vote, I feel like this is a fixed championship boxing fight, with Bron as the champ and Durant the challenger. No matter how much it seems he is outboxing the champ he will still lose if he doesn't get the knockout and it goes to a decision. All it takes is for champ to connect couple of times.

Yeah it shouldn't be that close right now imo...I think alot of kneejerk reactions will happen after the Miami vs OKC game on both sides.

Apparently he's been the best basketball player in the world for several years now, and yet none of you knuckleheads ever throw him in to the MVP conversation.
I know this is in jest, but I'm sure there's a better backup big in the NBA. Well..I'm sure there is, but I'm not sure I'd take any of them over Collison. He just does so many little things that don't really translate to impressive boxscore numbers. Great thing about him is that, despite already being 33 years old, he has the type of game where he will still be really productive and reliable for another 3-5 years.
As a Bulls fan, i take Taj Gibson but Nick Collison is just a damn professional and the exact type of player or unsung hero that every championship team needs.
There is a reason he has only played for one team his entire career (i am including Seattle here) despite being a 'expendable' role player.
One of the smartest players in the game. A great team guy.

I finally got around to looking up his on/off numbers with the team, the points per possesion differences are pretty decent when you consider he's a role player. His chemistry, especially with the young guys, is huge. I remember hearing on a broadcast early in the year about his work at practice w/ Lamb, and you can really tell Lamb seems so much more confident w/ Collison out there. A few PPP numbers:
Collison On:
Ibaka: 1.30
Lamb: 1.16
PJ III: 1.47
KD: 1.34
Off:
Ibaka: 1.09
Lamb: 1.11
PJ III: 0.93
KD: 1.20
Collison On:
Ibaka: 1.30
Lamb: 1.16
PJ III: 1.47
KD: 1.34
Off:
Ibaka: 1.09
Lamb: 1.11
PJ III: 0.93
KD: 1.20

If LeBron wants to have any chance, he MUST outplaye KD tonight other than that, it's all but over for LeBron.

44 games into a 82 game season. It's not all over no matter what happens tonight.

Re: 2013-14 MVP Discussion Thread Pt II
I'm not sure what some people's obsession over head to head games are in the scheme of an MVP year. Lebron and KD play each other twice a year. They play other people 80 times per year. Nobody is going to give a damn who beat who or outplayed who in 2 games. It's just an odd type of logic.
Being an MVP is about far more than 2 games can weigh.

True, but lets not assume KD will have a big drop off during the 2nd half of the season, even if Lebron starts to coast less, he probably won't catch up to whatever KD has achieved and will achieve

Sound good?
I realize theres no hope of this.

I love Lebron, but the MVP race is about 99.9% over for him if he drops this game against Durant. On the bright side however, if he does drop it, more focus on the playoff

It's not technically over, but it almost is. Durant has better stats, a better record, a big H2H win, and people are sick of giving Lebron the mvp.
It would take a huge turnaround in the second half of the season for Durant to lose the MVP.

But he did not outplay Lebron by any stretch individually, you can't have that claim
But yeah, MVP race is over
