unfortunately, Melo+Love isn't really possible. Aside from the fact that they essentially play the same position (at least optimally), both would have to take significant pay cuts in consecutive years.
as for waiting a year for Love and keeping the cap clean next year, what if he doesn't end up coming? are those who want to wait for Love ready to have 3 lost seasons? I have changed my tune somewhat. if Melo is available and wants to come to LA, he should be the first option. I believe in Kobe's ability to get healthy for one last run.
melo might play a lot of 4 now, but he still spends nearly 50% of his time at the 3. the knicks highest minute lineup has melo at the 3. melo and love can easily coexist because they both have really strong perimeter games, they dont occupy the same spots on offense, there would be absolutely no problem. and melo is actually better defensively at the 3. they dont play the same positions optimally at all really, plus positions arent really concrete things in the modern nba. the only problem is neither of them are great ballhandlers so youd need a good 1/2 to get them the ball in the spots they like.
if melo is leaving hes going to take a paycut with the hopes that the team he signs with will have enough cap to bring him help. if hes leaving NY its cuz he wants to win, not get paid.
