ST. PETERSBURG -- The Devil Rays recalled right-hander Jason Hammel from Triple-A Durham on Monday and will announce another roster addition, which could be former A's reliever Jay Witasick, on Tuesday.
In other news, right-hander Jae Seo accepted his outright assignment to Durham and the Rays released right-handed pitcher Shinji Mori.
Hammel, 24, was 4-5 with a 3.42 ERA in 13 starts at Durham. He threw two complete games, including a shutout, and held opponents to a .216 batting average. He made his first appearance at the Major League level last season for the Rays, going 0-6 with a 7.77 ERA in nine starts. He will pitch out of the bullpen for Tampa Bay this time.
Witasick has been invited to work out for the Rays at extended Spring Training on Tuesday, and if all goes well he will be in the Rays' bullpen for Tuesday night's game against the Padres.
If a deal is made to sign Witasick, a spot will have to be cleared on the 40-man roster. Tim Corcoran would be the likely candidate to be designated for assignment.
Oakland released Witasick on Thursday. At the time the right-hander was 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 16 relief appearances; he is 32-41 with a 4.59 ERA in 385 career appearances over 12 seasons in the Major Leagues.
Seo, 30, was designated for assignment June 2 after posting a 3-4 record and an 8.13 ERA in 11 games, including 10 starts.
Mori, 32, was signed in January 2006 and reported to Spring Training with the promise of contending for the vacant closer's role. But shoulder problems led to a slow start and his eventual end when he tore the labrum in his right shoulder while pitching in a Minor League exhibition game March 20, 2006.
Mori did not have surgery, instead opting for rehabilitation in the hope such an option would allow him to pitch in 2007.
The Rays released Mori in January and re-signed him to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
The Seibu Lions received approximately $750,000 from the Rays for the right to sign Mori. Mori signed a two-year deal with the Rays that guaranteed him $1.2 million. The Rays held a $2 million option for next season, but will pay Mori a $200,000 buyout instead.
