Corcoran and Orvella sent down.

Too bad for Corky.....gotta find the strike zone though

MIAMI -- The Devil Rays optioned Chad Orvella and Tim Corcoran to Triple-A Durham on Sunday night.

Both pitchers played roles in the Rays' bullpen blowing big leads to lose games during the past week. On Tuesday night, the Rays led the Blue Jays, 11-6, in the ninth inning before losing, 12-11, and they blew an 8-2 lead against the Marlins on Friday night in a 14-8 loss.

It could have been an 8 game winning streak.

Corresponding moves will be made prior to Tuesday night's game against the Padres at Tropicana Field. Seth McClung, Ruddy Lugo, Jeff Ridgway, Steve Andrade and Scott Dohmann are all possibilities to get the call from Durham. Also on the radar is Double-A Montgomery's Dale Thayer, who is 4-0 with a 2.35 ERA and 14 saves in 15 opportunities.

If we are to put things liek this into one big thread instead of giving them each their own, we'll never even approach the 100 thread barrier. Forums with so little traffic really don't need stifling further.

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Devil Rays recalled right-hander Jason Hammel from Triple-A Durham on Monday and will announce another roster addition, which could be former A's reliever Jay Witasick, on Tuesday.

In other news, right-hander Jae Seo accepted his outright assignment to Durham and the Rays released right-handed pitcher Shinji Mori.

Hammel, 24, was 4-5 with a 3.42 ERA in 13 starts at Durham. He threw two complete games, including a shutout, and held opponents to a .216 batting average. He made his first appearance at the Major League level last season for the Rays, going 0-6 with a 7.77 ERA in nine starts. He will pitch out of the bullpen for Tampa Bay this time.

Witasick has been invited to work out for the Rays at extended Spring Training on Tuesday, and if all goes well he will be in the Rays' bullpen for Tuesday night's game against the Padres.

If a deal is made to sign Witasick, a spot will have to be cleared on the 40-man roster. Tim Corcoran would be the likely candidate to be designated for assignment.

Oakland released Witasick on Thursday. At the time the right-hander was 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 16 relief appearances; he is 32-41 with a 4.59 ERA in 385 career appearances over 12 seasons in the Major Leagues.

Seo, 30, was designated for assignment June 2 after posting a 3-4 record and an 8.13 ERA in 11 games, including 10 starts.

Mori, 32, was signed in January 2006 and reported to Spring Training with the promise of contending for the vacant closer's role. But shoulder problems led to a slow start and his eventual end when he tore the labrum in his right shoulder while pitching in a Minor League exhibition game March 20, 2006.

Mori did not have surgery, instead opting for rehabilitation in the hope such an option would allow him to pitch in 2007.

The Rays released Mori in January and re-signed him to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

The Seibu Lions received approximately $750,000 from the Rays for the right to sign Mori. Mori signed a two-year deal with the Rays that guaranteed him $1.2 million. The Rays held a $2 million option for next season, but will pay Mori a $200,000 buyout instead.

I don't really understand why the A's let Witasek go?

Witasick asked to be designated so he could get more work. So he'll probably be pitching every night for us now. Twice/

Also, I don't see why Corcoran is considered so likely to be the guy to go. Unlike half of the pitchers on the 40 man roster, he's actually had success at the major league level. He was just miscast this year as a set up guy. In long relief, he looked really good. He actually pitched to contact, which seperated him from everyone else. He's not a 7th or 8th inning guy - he's a back end starter or long reliever, and he does OK as that. Yet they don't use him as such and wonder why it goes tits up. Seems stupid.

I like Corcoran...2 bad outings where he couldn't throw a strike cost him.

Witasek asked?

Wow...this could be a great move in the short term.

Jae Kuk Ryu should never have gone down. The Rays could have atolerable bullpen at this point:

Long relief - Ryu

Middle relief - Camp (meh), Salas (the git), Hammel (who's only kicking around until Jackson fails again, so then he can start)

Set up guys - Witasick, Glover (amazingly)

Closer - Reyes

If someone's going to be DFA'd, it's Fossum over Corcoran. Blatantly. Fossum may be a lefty, but that's all he has going for him. Corcoran was better than him last year.

Glover looks really close to being a solid guy.

I agree with you about Fossum, and in his case I don't think the lefty thing matters much if he can't get outs.

Jackson is hanging by a thread....but is out of options...and with his arm and age, he certainly would not clear waivers.

If Jackson fails as a starter again, he'll get moved to the pen. They won't just cut him. Nor should they, really. They have to stick with soemone of that talent until the day that they physically can't.

Besides, he's pitched decent-to-good in 4 of his last 6 starts. It's just the two Mike Matusow blowups in between that are always his undoing.

Hammel will be a good SU man. He's got two great pitches and nothing else.

Seems pointless given that Jonny won't actually play.

Well, that said, maybe he will. At least this potentially avoids having Ty Wiggonton in right field. And Josh Wilson playing at all.

I was at the game today, Gomes actually did play!

Had one dinger, and another in RC that fell a couple of feet short.

Technically, Ryu was sent down for Wheeler, and Camp for Zobrist. But yeah. Either way, both need to be gone.
