While I think Stephen A pulled that out of his ass, I do think we could trade for Rondo.
Our massive collection of expiring contracts could help Boston shed A TON of money (and specifically allow them to be even bigger players in 2015 free agency or use that cap space to acquire more assets) in the form of Jeff Green and/or Gerald Wallace. If Boston thinks they might lose Rondo, then they should try to use him improve their team. That means get the most of out of him. And yeah some picks or young players would be nice, but honestly giving them the $20 mil in cap space in 2015 (and another like $10 mil in 2016 savings) could be just as valuable. That capspace could turn into a MAX player/ all star, good players whose teams need to trade them for capspace, or into picks via trades. Not to mention we could send them Shumpert, the 2018 first and maybe a first (by means of a third team taking on Tyson). So $20 mil more in cap space (not counting the saving they get by not having Rondo), 2 firsts, and Shumpert is actually pretty good net for someone who is a FA at the end of the year.
And actually, as much as I wanted that trade all season... now I wouldn't even do it because I'd rather take the year of patience and keep the assets that are the extra cap space (even we did sign Rondo as FA the next summer, we'd still have the extra space by not having Green/Wallace), the picks (or the pick and Tyson), and Shumpert.
