New York Knicks

I'm calling it - Carmelo opts out - and he isn't staying, Felton will get traded (at least that is what they have told him), they don't have a SF, they don't have any picks. Other than that how was the play Ms. Lincoln? They need to trade some of those SGs for a SF or two.

Really not a good trade partner right now - we don't really want their FC players other than Chandler.

I just don't see this team making the playoffs, think we can pickup Kenyon Martin?

Edit 6-25: Carmelo Opts-out, Chandler, Felton out - Calderon, Dalembert and Shane Larkin in.

Edit 6-27: Cleanthony Early, SF, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, SF, Louis Labeyrie C - pretty shocked to see Early drop into the second round. Makes the trade even better for NY. If Anthony doesn't opt-in, NY will be under the luxury. Next year they would only have $18M in committed contracts.

USA Today: Entering Wednesday, the Knicks had no draft picks. The Tyson Chandler brought in two, and they bought the last one from the Indiana Pacers for cash. Early might be the best second-rounder in this draft, and he is a perfect fit for the triangle offense that New York may install. Antetokounmpo has great athleticism and, while not as talented as his younger brother, is another player who could make the Knicks' roster next year. Labeyrie likely will be kept overseas for a few years. Overall, this is a very nice haul for a team expecting nothing. Grade: A

Atlanta Hawks

Shelvin Mack and Mike Scott are restricted Fas, look for both to return. Look for Atlanta to take a SF with their Pick.

I don't see how they don't make the playoffs again with Horford returning - unless the injury bug bites them hard. The Millsap signing was brilliant for this team - look for Ferry to make another good signing this year.

Not much depth in the FC - so probably not a good trade partner.

Edit 6-27: Adreian Payne, SF, Walter Tavares, C, Lamar Patterson SG - Tavares is probably 2 years away, if ever... Not sure they helped themselves in the near term. Plenty of cap space to go after a SF - which is their biggest need.

USA Today: The Hawks drafted two college seniors (Payne and Patterson) and the biggest and arguably rawest player available (Tavares). The point of intrigue here is that the Hawks had a lot of talent up front already, with Al Horford and Paul Millsap well established as starters and Pero Antic and Mike Scott (a free agent they surely want to keep) on the bench. Payne is ready to play in the NBA but was a reach with more talented wing players still on the board who could have filled the Hawks' needs better. Tavares was a great pick because his upside is huge, with some likening him to fellow Spaniard Marc Gasol. Grade: C+

Edit 7-3: The Hawks have agreed to a three-year deal, 12M, with free agent guard Thabo Sefolosha

Charlotte Hornets

McRoberts is an RFA, look for him to return. Charlotte lucked into two first round picks. Look for Charlotte to take a backup PG with the 24th pick unless they take a PG with the 9th pick, regardless, two guards.

Look for Charlotte to return to the playoffs and look for them to get better. Look for them to be active in the FA market and pickup 1 FA player.

Might be a good trading partners If they take FC players in the draft and need guards and wings - but doubtful.

Edit 6-27: Noah Vonleh, PF, P.J. Hairston, SG, Semaj Christon, PG Dwight Powell, PF - nice solid draft. Very deep in the frontcourt now. Josh McRoberts opts out.

USA Today: The Hornets don't need a power forward, but they also have some use for the addition to the roster. For one, drafting Vonleh (and Powell) means they can allow Josh McRoberts to leave in free agency and let Vonleh and Cody Zeller compete for the starting job next to Al Jefferson. And those two Indiana products could be the frontcourt of the future, if Jefferson leaves after three years. Hairston was the money pick, making up for their ignoring needs with the No. 9 pick. Charlotte gets a very NBA-ready shooting guard who should push Gerald Henderson for playing time. The Hornets did what they needed to in this draft and can let Vonleh develop slowly. The only knock is that they could have used the No. 55 pick acquired in the No. 24-No. 26 swap with the Miami Heat instead of selling it to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Grade: A-

Brooklyn Nets

Paul Pierce, Shaun Livingston, Andray Blatche, Andrei Kirilenko will all hit the FA market - and that is 4 of the major pieces of the team. And yet they still have no cap flexibility and no picks.

Add to that - they want Williams gone and he wants to be gone.

Trades with the Wizards? Garnett for Nene and Garnett retires?

They do get Lopez back, if he stays healthy Garnet moves to PF. Plumlee was a terrific pick so they have a nice FC rotation.

Assuming PP resigns for one year - they are probably fine at the wings and make it back to the playoffs - but there is soooo much that could go wrong for this team.

Edit 6-27: Markel Brown, SG, Xavier Thames, PG, Cory Jefferson, PF - bought themselves into the draft. Nicely done.

USA Today: The Nets entered the draft without any assets but paid out (as owner Mikhail Prokhorov is known to do) to get a sizeable chunk of the second round. They went with college veterans, and it's easy to see how any of their three picks could crack the team's rotation next year. These were safe choices for a team that's built to win now, and they got good value at each draft slot. They hosted the draft and made the most out of nothing. Grade: A-

Edit: Jarrett Jack and Sergey Karasev in Thorton out. Andrei Kirilenko opts in

Washington Wizards

I won't write-up the status of the Wizards. Other than to say, decisions need to be made on Gortat, Ariza, Gooden and Booker. Also if Satoransky comes over this year.

Edit 6-27: Webster out with back surgery. Sold pick, lost out on Satoransky for a couple of years.

USA Today: The Wizards sold the No. 46 pick to the Los Angeles Lakers for cash despite several big needs. What's more, they don't seem to be gearing up to land a major free agent. This is a head-scratcher. Jordan Clarkson, whom the Lakers took, would have been a nice addition. Grade: D

Edit 7-1: Gortat agrees to a 5 yrs $60M contract.

Edit: Pierce, 2 yr MLE. Gooden agrees to vet minimum, Seraphin accepts the QO (ugh), S&T for Humphries and Blair, 2 year vet minimum deal for Temple.

Chicago Bulls

Look for Chicago to Amnesty Boozer and sign an FA - my guess will be Anthony, but I could see them trading for Love. Mirotic coming over would be a huge plus.

They will need to make decisions on Hinrich, Mohammed and Augustin. That will largely be about who they draft. Where they are drafting there will be choices for all positions.

As a trade partner, only if we want Boozer - so no.

Edit 6-27: Doug McDermott, SF, Cameron Bairstow, PF - brilliant.

USA Today: It's easier to understand why the Bulls traded the No. 16 and No. 19 picks for McDermott when you factor in free agency. Sure, Chicago could have added two nice players instead of one (as the Nuggets did). But they needed to keep money off the books if they're going to pursue Carmelo Anthony, as is expected. McDermott is a good fit for the Bulls with or without Anthony. They needed another scorer, and he is a better athlete than advertised. Bairstow is ridiculously strong and has more touch than Taj Gibson, somewhat replicating what they may lose if they cut or trade Carlos Boozer. The grade is somewhat incomplete because this particular two-for-one only makes sense if they succeed in free agency. Grade: B+

Edit: Carlos Boozer amnestied.

Toronto Raptors

Big decision on Lowry, if he stays they are back in the playoffs. Salmons will be waived. Nando de Colo, Patrick Patterson and Greivis Vasquez are restricted.

Assuming they resign Lowry, Vasquez and Pattrson, they could use a backup C in the draft - not a lot of those in this draft.

Don't know that they would want to part with any of their FC players. But they are thin at the wing, so it would be possible.

Edit 6-27: Bruno Caboclo, SF, DeAndre Daniels, SF - Interesting draft? - pretty sure they aren't going after Ariza.

USA Today: Who? That was the astounding reaction across the NBA draft world when Caboclo was picked. Even ESPN international expert Fran Fraschilla, who in his typical hyperbole extoled "the Brazilian Kevin Durant," said he was shocked Caboclo slipped into the first round. No. 20 is a very high draft spot, and there were a lot of good players on the board. The Raptors are a playoff team with few clear needs, so taking a player who is possibly four years away from cracking a rotation seems like an odd decision. Daniels is NBA-ready, though his thin frame isn't optimal. There might have been a few better small forward prospects, but he can shoot and impressed during Connecticut's title run. This was a strange draft session for the Raptors, who were thought to love Syracuse point guard Tyler Ennis only to have him off the board by their pick. Giving guaranteed money to a prospect as unusually unproven as Caboclo is a tough sell. Grade: C-

Edit 7-3: Toronto agrees to four-year, $48 million contract with Lowry, 3 years $18M with Patterson. Novak + a second to Utah.

Edit: Signed James Johnson 2 yr, 5M, Vasquez, 2 yr, 13M

Miami Heat

The question, and really the only quesiton, is if the Big 3 resign on their player options. If they do, they are back in the playoffs. No real trade opportunities for the Wizards.

Ray Allen, Shane Battier, Michael Beasley, Mario Chalmers, Udonis Haslem, James Jones, Rashard Lewis and Greg Oden are all unrestricted FAs.

Edit 6-27: Wade, Bosh and James opt-out. Drafted Shabazz Napier, PG - has to make LeBron happy. I think it was a stupid trade by Charlotte on many different levels.

USA Today: Sure, Napier was a solid value pick at a position of need. He's tough, versatile and savvy, with a winning pedigree courtesy of two college national championships. But mostly, LeBron James loved him. How can you argue with that when the team is pressed to keep the superstar free agent? They gave up their second-rounder to trade up with the Hornets for Napier, and that move made sense. Grade: A

Edit 7-1: Wade, Bosh and James opt-out.

Indiana Pacers

The big decision is what to do with Stephenson and Turner and the SG position. Stephenson is an RFA - chances are they will match.

I don't see the Pacers trading West, Scoal, Hibbert or Mahinmi.

I don't see the Pacers missing the playoffs - to good a regular season team.

USA Today: The Pacers sold the No. 57 pick to the New York Knicks for cash. That's it. "That was a waste of two weeks," President Larry Bird said in the post-draft news conference. Indiana has enough needs on its bench that taking a gamble with that second-rounder would have been worth it, but finances hurt sometimes. It's understandable but disappointing. Grade: C-

All this turmoil in Memphis. They've never recovered from two massive mistakes:

(1) Trading Kevin Love for OJ Mayo
(2) Taking Thabeet over James Harden

They could have built around Gasol/Love/Conley/Harden, and been elite for a decade.

They had their chances and missed, and as a result have never been able to get beyond a certain ceiling. It's a worrisome comparison to our Wizards. We may be very good in a couple of years, but never great, incapable of recovering from the 2011 draft debacle, etc.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Irving to demand a trade? If he gets hurt or even just plays poorly next season, he could easily cost himself millions by not signing an extension this summer.

Irving seems a bit childish on this one and the Cavs seem dysfunctional.

I find this Kyrie Irving situation fascinating.

Yes, it certainly would make more sense for Irving to demand a trade, and in essence, he is. He is telling Cleveland that they better trade him.

But the more I think about it, the more I wonder if anyone really wants him. We're talking about a guy who is likely to make one more (undeserved) All Star game during his rookie contract and thus become eligible for the Derrick Rose Supermax contract when his rookie deal expires. That's likely to be a 5-year $100M deal. Can you win with Kyrie Irving soaking up over 30% of your cap? Plus he's the classic "empty stats" guy who posts great numbers but freezes out his teammates and avoids defense like the plague. And finally, he certainly seems to have a bad attitude.

It'll be interesting to see if Cleveland gets anything back at all in a Kyrie trade. They might be better off riding it out and forcing him to accept the qualifying offer. Who knows, in the next 2 years, he might look around at all the young talent in Cleveland and conclude that he would be better off staying. (Interestingly, Kyrie won't be eligible for a supermax contract if he's signed by anyone as a free agent. He must be extended off of his existing rookie deal.)

Don't forget Thompson, who hasn't set the world on fire either.

Aha! Your post explains why the NBA keeps giving the Cavs the #1 pick! All the other GMs petitioned for this to happen. Why? Because the Cavs will pick a mistake, and that way they might not wind up making that bad pick!

This is a surpising turn of events in Memphis. Joeger was given an extension. I wonder if the negotiations with the wolves were an attempt to get a raise/extension with the Grizzles?

I'm calling it - Carmelo opts out - and he isn't staying, Felton will get traded (at least that is what they have told him), they don't have a SF, they don't have any picks.

I agree Carmelo will opt out, however I don't think it is his best move. Unless some team is dying to give him a full max deal. Say a team wants to pay him 18 million. Trading for him with an extension averaging just over 16 million after this year will likely give them more flexibility than signing him for 18 million as a free agent.

It obviously is better for the Knicks since they at least get productive expiring players in return(or unproductive ones and incentives).
