Rumour: Ettore Messina to become assistant coach

Post#1 » by Nolan » Tue Jun 10, 2014 11:47 pm

http://projectspurs.com/2014-articles/reports-popovich-to-add-ettore-messina-to-coaching-staff.html

According to reports, Ettore Messina, current head coach of CSKA Moscow, will join the San Antonio Spurs’ coaching staff after the season ends.

Messina is a four-time Euroleague Champion and a two-time Euroleague Coach of the Year. In 2008, he was named one of the 50 Greatest Euroleague Contributors. On top of all his Euroleague accomplishments, Messina has also been named the Italian League’s Best Coach on three separate occasions and served as the head coach of the men’s Italian National Team for four years.

Messina has been considered head coaching jobs before with the Atlanta Hawks and Utah Jazz, and has served under Mike Brown with the Los Angeles Lakers. Before coming to the NBA, Spurs guard Manu Ginobili also played for Messina in Europe on the Italian club Virtus Bologna.

Great hire. Kinda looks like Pop's/RC just hired his new successor.

And the report's being shot down by RC.

I stop caring about assistant coaches after Bud leaves.

It just feels to me that whoever comes in now, it'll be a short while until they get nabbed as a head coach somewhere.

And regarding Spurs coach of the future, I really want it to be someone who Pop grooms. Ettore Messina is his own man.

I really miss Bud. He was the only guy I felt okay with if Pop decides to quit. Now I feel like we're doomed whenever Pop/Duncan leaves.

Messina is a very good coach. Although as someone mentioned he pretty much has his own system and ideas. Although he might be willing to take some tutelage from Pop.

So what's up with this guy? Who started the rumors?

Or maybe RC just didn't want this thing to distract the players during the finals?

Thanks for the honesty.

Seems like it was just a rumor, but who knows. If somethings going to happen it should happen in the next couple days.

I think it was just a distraction during the finals, but it'll now be announced. But who knows.

Take David Blatt if works out in Cleavland? He can yell players here and does not have to deal with primadonnas.
