With all the max money available to teams this offseason, it's a pretty sure bet that Wall would have been offered the full max from someone. In hindsight, I'd say the decision to extend Wall to a max contract was the right one. Thoughts?

I thought at the time it was a good idea for the Zards to offer Wall the max. Fact is, he was going to be offered the max (or very close to it) this offseason by either the Zards or another team.

If the Zards had not offered Wall the max last season, the team would be sending him the signal that it's not sure that he's their franchise player. While others may disagree, I think it's smart not to play those kind of head games with a player who is probably your most valuable asset, especially when you're almost certain to offer him the max (or close to it) the very next offseason.

Gordon Hayward might get near max according to rumors. Bledsoe most certainly will. Max to your best player is basically the norm in the NBA now unfortunately. Things wont change until next CBA.

I didn't like maxing Wall out last year, but I'm glad it worked out. Wouldn't want to risk losing him in the open market now after the year he had, even if he was inconsistent(at best) in the playoffs.
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

Max Wall a year early.

Sell your R2 pick.

Pay the whole Okafor $14m salary (plus a R1 pick -- i.e. a legit prospect at a cheap salary) for a year of Gortat.

Cry that you lost $13m (on paper).

Have no trade assets and no cap flexibility.

Give the draft a pass.

Give the worst C in the league his qualifying offer.

Don't give a solid, productive 4 his inexpensive qualifying offer.

Oh yeah, that's it -- that's how you do it. You take it up a notch! Let me tell you....

They had to sign wall. No matter what- now kyrie got the same- lillard and all the young pgs getting max. When u look at it that way - it makes sense to give wall the same as his peers- The sal cap wayyyy too low when teams going for 2 billion!

Of course they were going to sign Wall. They just did it a year early.

To my knowledge, no, Irving has not been maxxed yet. Lillard has not been maxxed either.

Where the cap is set has nothing whatever to do w/ this subject, btw -- doesn't mean I disagree w/ you, however.

Irving has been offered the max and presumably will sign it:

I don't like this any better for the Cavs than I did the Wall extension for the Wizards. The Cavs might have a little more to lose if Wiggins negotiates to get out after a 3 year extension, I see that as less likely to happen with Beal and the Wizards.

John just made the monthly SI Kids poster, which is reserved for megastars like Usain Bolt and Jeter. He's arrived and the max was the announcement so I think it's already paying dividends.

So now, our boy Wall is hanging on MY boy's wall.

He was ecstatic when he opened that thing up btw...

Not to argue - but the reason the cap has something to do with it is, maxing a player or paying any 1 player 1/3 (20mil) of the cap truly handicaps your team when mid level players make 1/6 (10) (Ariza, gortat, etc). This makes signing any player to the max not named lebron or Durant illogical because you can't win a ring with any single one of them but you must just to be competitive - hell it took 3 max players to win back to back rings. :banghead:
