Pau will supposedly re-up with the Lakers if they land Melo. It would be Melo, Kobe (who supposedly looks very good), Pau, and Randle (who the Lakers are very high on). That with some flexibility going forwards and boatloads of cash coming in. Jim Buss wants to spend and change his image. The Lakers made over 100 million in profits this year. They'll sell Melo on a decent core right now with him and all the money and motivation in the world (not to mention history) to win championships.
Kobe flew back in from Europe for the meeting. Apparently the Lakers are going all out for him.
Did the Lakers hire a coach yet?
Nope, and that has been their plan all along. As soon as MDA left town a few of the beat reporters in LA mentioned that the team planned to wait it out until meeting with Melo and/or Lebron. It's a carrot they have that no other franchise has. They won't get to "pick" the coach per say, but they can definitely influence that decision.
The team wanted to see how the draft and free agency played out before hiring a coach. As a fan, I actually like that strategy.
