People said LeBron and Wade wouldnt work either. I dont buy it. You put those two guys with Pau and some nice roll players. Definitely a west threat.

Pau will supposedly re-up with the Lakers if they land Melo. It would be Melo, Kobe (who supposedly looks very good), Pau, and Randle (who the Lakers are very high on). That with some flexibility going forwards and boatloads of cash coming in. Jim Buss wants to spend and change his image. The Lakers made over 100 million in profits this year. They'll sell Melo on a decent core right now with him and all the money and motivation in the world (not to mention history) to win championships.

Kobe flew back in from Europe for the meeting. Apparently the Lakers are going all out for him.

Did the Lakers hire a coach yet?

Nope, and that has been their plan all along. As soon as MDA left town a few of the beat reporters in LA mentioned that the team planned to wait it out until meeting with Melo and/or Lebron. It's a carrot they have that no other franchise has. They won't get to "pick" the coach per say, but they can definitely influence that decision.

The team wanted to see how the draft and free agency played out before hiring a coach. As a fan, I actually like that strategy.

This isn't 2009. Pau and Kobe couldn't even win with Nash and Dwight Howard. Not to mention Buss dying. This isn't the same Lakers organization from the 80s, and 00s.

Neither one of those two guys is prime Lebron. Prime Lebron is so good that 'fit' doesn't even really matter.

I hope Lebron/Melo are excited by the prospect of Larry Drew. I don't see how 'not having a coach' is much of a selling point if the list of available coaches is crap.

Yeah i didn't say they were favorites or anything. But they would definitely be a playoff team. They wouldn't be as bad together as some are making it out to be is my point.

Really? Which one of those three excels at defense? And who is their coach? That's maybe an 8 seed- and that assumes Kobe is anywhere close to what he was- which is no given. They'd still be rolling out the corpse of Steve Nash, the corpse of Kobe, Melo, Randle (a rookie), and maybe Pau (and it's a stretch to think Pau goes back there after they dangled him as trade bait for two years). This is not your fathers Lakers. Old man Buss is gone- the children are going to run that business into the ground.

Hey maybe Lebron joins the west coast party after Riley fails.

Entirely possible the PHX or LA comes into play now that Miami has seemingly struck out on its top 4 or 5 targets - and Bosh/Wade are asking for more than Lebron's table scraps.

This is true but this is the lakers. They always seem to be able to pull a rabbit out of their hat... I can't count them out on getting bron, melo, Kobe and pau. That's why I'm thinking if melo chooses the lakers at face value it doesn't look like they are going anywhere anytime soon. However, if that decision is made you already know there has been some behind the scenes action with players and another dynasty will be formed. The lakers are the x-factor to me in all of this.

To remind you. I live in Phoenix. Do you know what life would be like for me then?

The news that comes out today will be very telling IMO

It will be the same news as everywhere else though. Meeting went well. Melo wants to win. Lakers are the favorites. Everyone panics and says move on.

My pessimistic outlook is that it'll come out as NY are even bigger favorites after today
Kris Bryant will go down as the greatest Chicago athlete after MJ

edit 7/30/21: okay maybe not, but it was a fun ride nonetheless

Making the playoffs in the NBA isn't a big accomplishment. Having a chance to make the playoffs isn't going to be why Melo leaves NY.

They're the devil.

Perhaps I'm an idiot for posting these numbers in public but...

I married my college girlfriend. Her last 3 S.S. - 666
My last 3 S.S. - 777

Any ballboys want to ask if it worked out?

If this is a basketball decision for Melo, as he continually states he wants to win, no one can make legitimate basketball reason as to why LA is a quality destination.

CHI, HOU & DAL are all better winning solutions.

Kobe is 35. Pau is 33. Melo will be 30. What is their future? They don't even have a head coach in place.

There is nothing appealing about LA from a basketball perspective. Nothing.
