If he knew from the beginning that he was going back to NY then there's no reason to waste our whole day kissing his ass.

He'll be taking a paycut to join a rebuilding team when he can take a paycut to join a contending team whether it be Chicago, Dallas or Houston. If that is the case he has the wrong people giving him advice.

We'll see.

So leaving more money and his family to come play in Chicago with a player that hasn't been healthy for over two years...is taking good advice?

People need to stop hating on this man for his decision. It's a life decision, an easy 5 year commitment.

He'll make the right decision for him, he already has.

Well I think the options of how generous he needs to be should be laid out, and well before he has to weigh the pitch vs everyone else.

Especially due to the perception of our orgs frugal nature, you can't just tell a guy, "We'll work it out." I mean I think that was Krause's line when putting Eddy and Tyson together...

For all Melo knows if he 'verbally commits' to that, GarPax just rub their hands together and pull out the contract for 15m right there on the spot.

Disagree somewhat. He can easily say Phil sold him on his plan and he believes the Knicks give him the best chance to win over the life of the contract.

You guys are making way too big of a deal about that quote, which was essentially made to posture the Knicks into taking him seriously about leaving.

Knicks fans think that's a big positive.

Knicks fans recently thought a team with Raymond Felton and Pablo Prigioni as its point guards was going to challenge for the eastern conference.

And they were so excited when they get Eddy McCurry from us

Knicks, no matter what, will always be a joke!

And Melo is just supposed to buy this? Maybe we should have went into more detail. Or I guess, waiting for the next meeting for that.

It's a chicken/egg scenario. If Melo wants his money outside of New York, he's going to need New York's cooperation. They have no reason to cooperate unless they know Melo isn't coming back, so it's difficult to line up sign-and-trades with them.

If Melo is walking one way or the other, I think Phil ends up helping.

This year is a lost cause for NY either way and he may want to do business with the Bulls in the future, at a point where he will want us to not slam the phone down.

This is not worth burning a bridge over once (and if) Melo were to decide he's done in NY anyway.

I really think it comes down to Melo his wife and kid Loving NY.

Doesn't mean it made a good impression if we gave him no hints at all how it would all shake out. And I wouldn't blame Melo at all at some point to be thinking....

I have a hard time believing that in the 9hrs they spent there wasn't any mention of "if you sign for $15, we can keep Taj/McDermott/Butler and lose MDJ/Snell, if you need $18, we have to lose Butler, if you need $20-22, we have to lose Taj and then some combo of the others."

My guess is they didn't talk contract specifics, just that different salary ranges entail different sets of moves that the Bulls would have to make (unless they can get NY to agree to an S&T). But there's no way given the long-term interest between the 2 parties that there wasn't some sense of how much he'd make with the Bulls, and I can't believe they'd be stupid enough to only have one option available for him.

Taking a paycut to lose is not the same as taking a paycut to win. Like I said, if he stays there's nothing wrong with that. But taking a paycut to lose (at least 1 season) is not smart, especially when you are 30 years old.

I do not know what is going on here. From the very beginning, the only thing that changed, is that the Bulls had a very good meeting with Melo.

NY was always going to offer Melo the max

The amount the Bulls could clear was well known.

NY was not going to play, at all, unless Melo was prepared to walk.

NY was never going to take on Boozer's contract.

It would be very expensive, If, make the a big IF, a 3rd team would consider taking on Boozer.

Everybody, including Melo, knew all of this, and Chicago was still high on his list, even before what was said to be a very good meeting.

It was always a long shot, but nothing has changed to make it more of one now.

@FisolaNYDN: Knicks hoping to get a verbal commitment from Carmelo tonight in LA. A source "doubts" it will happen this quickly.

It's kind of crazy. All the tea leaves really point to Chicago. The insiders we have here (who have proven to have good info in the past) have had him anywhere from leaning Chicago to a lock. Noah's recruiting. The fact that he spent all that time with Pippen and we haven't really backed off our pursuit (you would think we'd have a pretty good idea of our chances). He's also had interest in coming here in the past. The reported interest in playing for Thibs. Some other random stuff here and there over the past few weeks.

The main thing fueling the prevailing thought that he stays in NY, besides the fact that he seems to love it there, is the belief among just about everybody that he ultimately won't be able to turn down the extra money. That all depends on what his mindset really is. I guess we'll see soon enough.
