Why do people say the super max.
It's just the max.
HIS max.
Because HIS max is more than the regular max because of his All-Star selections, etc.
Not it isn't.

Why is Melo's max more than Lebron's then?

Then why can he make more than Lebron can make? Time in league + add. "superstar" qualifications = supermax.

Melo did not take a discount in 2011 but instead signed a max extension so his 2013-2014 salary was $21.4m 105% of that is $22.5m.
That's the ONLY his max is higher than James'. But he doesn't qualify for some special category of salary.

Lebron would qualify too then for the super-max (it is commonly called that) if he didn't take the discount. It's the very most you can make in the league which is why it has been termed that.

There's obviously a different max for different players depending on years in the league, etc. The top category people call the super-max. Like here: http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/whe ... o-the-max/

I know it's commonly called that, and it's commonly redundant.
I think people also commonly misunderstand how max's are calculated. There is no "Kobemax" or "supermax."
There is just the max. Not qualifier is needed.

Of course there is.
I just explained that to you.
0-6 years in the league it's 25% of the specially calculated cap figure.
7-9 it's 30%
10+ it's 35%.
OR 105% of your last salary.
But Melo's salary is NOT the highest you can qualify for in the NBA.
If Stoudemire had opted out of his contract, he would have qualified for a higher salary than Melo.
Kobe Bryant made $30m this past season.
So calling Melo's max the Kobe or supermax suggesting it's the highest salary you can get inthe NBA is not only superfluous, it's misleading.

And yet both of those franchises have celebrated 16 championships combined since we've celebrated our last.
