Well then they have even fewer minutes for him! There's Frye, O'Quinn, and Nicholson ahead of him now at PF. None of those guys can really play much C, and Gordon absolutely can't.

From what I've seen Payton's vision and passing skills leave a lot to be desired. He's extremely quick and a nice athlete but he's a scoring, driving guard like Smart. I get Smart's questionable fit next to Oladipo, but I don't know that Payton--another athlete that can't shoot and excels only when he's diving at the rim--solves that issue.

That's true, but what I don't like about these moves is that they're decreasing the value of the stockpile they have. Nicholson and Fournier will never see the court so they can't raise their value, and guys like O'Quinn and Harris will get a lot less chance to shine too. If they got the SG version of Frye I would understand--they actually had him in Afflalo!--since that way they could clear up time for the younger front court players. It's not a disaster and in many ways their position is enviable, but I wouldn't be surprised if they stockpiled their way into one seriously messy roster in a year or two.

O'Quinn is a center, and Nicholson can play there in a pinch

depth chart will look like this
Gordon/Frye/Nicholson
Vuc/O'Quinn/Nicholson

Thanks for the correction. That's still not enough minutes to go around, since they didn't sign Frye for $8m a year to play 16 minutes off the bench. If they want to give Gordon say 28 minutes and Frye 30, that leaves 40 minutes for the rest of the front court. Vucevic has averaged a bit more than 32 minutes over the last two years, so that leaves 8-10 minutes for Nicholson and O'Quinn, maybe a few more if they roll back minutes a bit for the other guys. That means pretty much giving up on those two. (Ditto Fournier at the 3.) Like I said, their moves won't create a disaster--the team was going to be really bad this year no matter what--they just made things more complicated than they needed to be by creating a scarcity of PT at every position except the one they're thinnest at (PG).

I assume they don't see much in Nicholson, and maybe either scaling Gordon's minutes back to work him in or giving him minutes at the 3 which they also don't have. Either way the 4 years is weird
