Ah yes, Mark Rippetoe's program...I did Starting Strength for about 9 months. My PB is still 265 for bench, 315 deadlift, and 285 squat). Sadly, an ankle injury from a volleyball game and a broken shoulder from ultimate frisbee keeps me from ever achieving my PB again :( .

Starting Strength is good for beginners. Once you're doing with Starting Strength, look into Louie Simmons' Westside Barbell training.

265 bench :o man that's crazy upper body strength compared to your other two.

Actually I'm running Babylover's variant of SS, feel like the original doesn't have enough pull movements, recipe for rotator cuff injuries.. I was going to move onto Upper-Lower when I felt I maxed out SS, I'll check out Westside though, thanks man.

Sucks about the injuries... I've basically stopped playing other sports because if I got injured and had to stop lifting I'd go absolutely insane. Pretty much an addict :noway: :noway:

That's great... I've got Intermediate Micro (a friend took it, supposedly scared the pants off him, it's mostly using calculus to predict supply and demand with substitutes and compliments) and Regression Analysis this coming semester. Don't ask why we have a whole class on Regression... But I guess the RAPM discussions will have prepared me a bit better for it

Great thread, and never pictured a lot of people here as who they are, nor unfortunately have I ever been lucky enough to meet an NBA guy. 28 years old, grew up playing ball til HS then got into running/cycling, kinda followed college hoops for a few years and got into the NBA more as I got older, by the time I finished grad school was getting into it. Finally signed up for the forum and tbh got way more interested in stats and history of the game because of this forum. I was a big math/science guy in high school even though I hung out with a lot of the basketball and sports guys, went to school for biology and forensic science. Now working in a research and development molecular bio lab, but currently wasting time at work on here.

27 years old spanish, die-hard FC Barcelona fan until I was 14-15 years old, when I started to lose interest in football - soccer - and started to play basketball with friends and watching ACB games. I didn't understand the rules properly at first, but anyway, I found that sport amazing.

When I was 16 or 17 it was the year Lebron came into the league and also the year when I started to follow the NBA on a daily basis, not by watching games because I didn't have the tools to do so and they were way too late for me, but I would visit NBA.com every day to follow the league as closely as possible and I would mainly focus on Lebron. Basically my "nba career" began along with Lebron's.

Apart from basketball, I follow motorsports and cycling. I'm addicted to PC games and I like to create classic teams in the NBA Live and play with Olajuwon, Lebron, Jordan, KG,etc... making them have the GOAT peaks. I also like to think for myself what would RealGM think about these peaks (they are all absurd peaks, quadruple double as average) and how would the posters rank them.

I just recently turned 22 years old and was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. I am currently studying Business Technology Management (pretty much IT and Business mixed into one program) and will hopefully be getting my Bachelor's of Commerce in one year. Ardee, I am also of Indian descent and I'm wondering which part of India are you from? My parents are from Punjab and therefore I'm Punjabi.

I always liked basketball casually as a kid but really got into it seriously around 2007 when the Raptors made the playoffs for the first time in a while. I also really enjoyed watching LeBron and he quickly became my favourite player.

Oh, I've also never met an NBA player but Dwight Howard does follow me on Twitter. I also was at the Raptors/Clippers game last year when Ross dropped 51, Raps/Nets Game 1 last year, Raps/Magic game 4 in 2008, Cavs/Raps home opener in the 2010 season (got to see LeBron and Shaq).

The 265 is an outlier because I became hopelessly addicted to weight lifting in high school but did not have a great program - I mainly focused on pull ups, dips, and bench press because those were the main events that we would do in weight lifting competitions. I'm also 5'9 with a short wingspan and I gain muscle (and sadly weight) very easily. I didn't get into squats and dead lifts until years later when I actually started researching weight lifting and realized how poorly I was doing things.

This is a good topic idea...I think I respond better to debates if I feel like I know the person versus it just being an anonymous person :) .

Don't worry about Intermediate Micro, it was over-hyped here as well...it's a breeze. Regression (Econometrics) on the other hand, will kill you if you're not willing to really give the Linear Algebra some time and don't work well with endless tedious mathematics. Also, that's pretty standard, I've taken 3 classes on regression (and many more that have applied it) and there's still plenty to work with. It's a pretty broad branch and is a huge staple in any sort of advanced analytics.

Same, only grandparents instead of parents. Though I was born and raised here.

You could do more school, or make a career out of arguing with people. PoliSci is really good for teaching you about argumentative techniques, hehe. That was my major at university.

Poli Sci is a good major if you are interested in taking the foreign service exam (which i have considered), thats probably about it.

i dont know if it teaches you good argumentative techniques, but it definitely teaches you how to approach and debate subjects objectively. probably the most important lesson i learned was when our professor reamed this egyptian girl for getting emotional when talking about Morsi/Egyptian politics.

I've got youngest for now

Just turned 19, raised and currently living in Grand Rapids, MI. Go to a smallish school on the west side of Michigan where I am studying architecture.

During the summer I work a construction job to pay for school

Balled a little in high school. Consider me kind of like Kendall Marshall. I could pass, I could defend, but don't ask me to do anything else. Helps that I was 6'2 playing point guard against shorter guys

Got into the NBA during the going to work pistons era. Loved watching the finals against the Lakers and loved it ever since. Diehard Pistons fan and a Diehard U of M fan as well. Have met both Nik Stauskas and Tim Hardaway Jr.

Also have met some/ a lot of the Orlando Magic, friends with the owners grandson

That's really all ya need to know

For the money, baby.

When I left being a government attorney to practice privately, my hours kept creeping up until I was at the office about 80-90 hours a week. After a couple of years of this, my wife left and I had to think about whether I liked the person I was becoming and decided I didn't. Drifted for a couple of years, signed up to go to Florida to fight Everglades fires (I was a volunteer FF) and while that didn't work out, met a girl and moved down here anyway.

Depends on which route you take.

You get into political philosophy, and it becomes very much about rhetoric, logical construction and properly planning for your opponents' points and counters. When I say "argue" or "argumentative," there's no negative bias to that point. I don't want to conjure the image of some red-faced, spittle-spraying jackass shouting down the opposition, but rather a legitimate and civilized debate. We spent a great deal of time on the root concept of the social contract, the notions of state domain, sovereignty versus responsibility in the era of globalization, etc, etc. The degree itself was essentially a continuous debate on shifting topics and to be relevant and successful, it was key to learn critical analysis, debate and so forth. I had some pretty wicked professors mixed in with the usual crop of air-wasting jerks only there for the research grants, and that really helped.

Like most undergraduate degrees, PoliSci is singularly useless for anything but having a degree in my experience so far, but it does set you up for some interesting graduate opportunities and thereafter for a variety of different fields.

That's a very fascinating life story, penbeast. I have a couple of iBanker friends who are seriously considering quitting because of the 80-90 hour work weeks. I am in my mid-20s and surprised to see that a couple of posters who I thought were older than I am are actually younger :).
