Even with Bledsoe, I think we will be fighting for one of the last playoff spots. The Suns are nowhere near "contention", but as Suns fans we should just be happy to be mediocre. It seems to be our status quo, and what most fans really want anyway. Why build for a future championship team, when you can run and gun for the 8th seed year in and year out.
"With the 14th pick in the 2015 NBA draft, the Phoenix Suns choose..."
the thing is nowadays, championship teams can't really be built by organizations anymore. Players wield way too much power. It's either luck or collusion, those are the only ways.
I agree that luck has a lot to do with it, but you have to put yourself in the position to get lucky. The luck of drafting a superstar talent is much higher in the top 5 of the draft than it is when you are drafting with the 14th pick over and over. It is like those lotto commercials say, "you cant win if you don't play".
caution! rant ahead:
Which is why I don't understand why the Suns are so hell bent on making the playoffs when we don't even have a franchise guy yet. That seems counterproductive because I am certainly not drinking the Kool-Aid on the idea that a superstar in their prime is going to suddenly choose Phoenix in free agency or force a trade. So we should just be a treadmill team for years waiting for that star to come along? That sounds fun! Oh wait no it doesn't, especially when you think about how it is going to stunt the growth of the few young pieces of talent this team has. We already saw it last year, when we as a "rebuilding team", would rather bring in a half broken Barbosa, than give minutes to Archie Goodwin because getting that 8th seed was so important. Instead of filling out the roster with young guys with potential, they brought in guys like Christmas and Randolph, that sent a clear sign to me what this organization wants and that is to simply make the playoffs, no more no less.
All this makes me laugh because the Suns insistence at being simply competitive all the time is what is holding them back from getting a franchise player. When will the light bulb go on? Phoenix, you need to draft your franchise player, stop playing these games. What is the hurt in trying, if it doesn't work you can go back to fighting like hell for the 8th spot. We know, you are really good at it, its one of your skills!
What's the definition of insanity? Its doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Yup, that's the Phoenix Suns in a nutshell. It is why this team is 5th alltime in wins, yet has no rings. The Suns are always good, but never good enough, and they have not allowed themselves enough opportunities to clean house and draft a great player that can make a great team. Why? My guess is most Suns fans are just happy to be in it and don't want to go through the growing pains of building a contender. They would rather watch a decent team year after year, even if it meant never getting a ring. ( In fact a poster on these boards made a general board topic on that very idea.) And the biggest thing obviously, from an owners stand point, consistently making the playoff's means more money. Who want's to lose money on rebuilding a team, even if it provides a brighter future? Certainly not the Suns.
