Gibson is 29, but he has so few miles on his body for someone of that age. For example John Wall just turned 24 this month, has played only 3 1/2 seasons in the NBA with only one real injury, and he's got more miles on him than Taj. I think Gibson probably has the wear-and-tear of a 25-year-old, so not much. His age really doesn't bother me, given that he's still improving.
Mark me down as someone who would trade Zeller and a 1st for him in a heartbeat.
Wear and tear has little to do once you reach a certain age. For most players that tends to be 32-34. There are always exceptions but we wont rely on those for now.
So lets apply that he does have low mileage, his good weight management and health lets go ahead and consider him to be on the high end of 33 or 34 before he starts to decline.
So a trade for him would give the Hornets a guy who is experienced, puts up good numbers, is in good health, plays defense and can run the floor. How long can he be productive at this? Lets say 4 - 5 years. This is already more then they will get out of their young players, most likely.
I guess to sum it all up without going on a larger rant, Zeller and a first is absolutely worth Gibson if it means the Hornets come that much closer to contending. And that is what everyone should be considering, take advantage of the East while half of the east is still in rebuild mode and the other half is injured.
I don't understand why people put so much trust in Zeller, he reminds me way too much of the Bargnari crowd. The 7 footers who score like a 2/3, rebound like a 2, defend bigs like a 2 and are not very valuable unless being used as a 7th man.... I cant even say 6th because the lack of defense is an issue.
