The question is do the C's want him to have a big year? I think a big year makes it more likely he goes and a bad year more likely he stays..
Of course the team wants him to have a big year! They still haven't given up on trying to improve the team rapidly and a big showing from Rondo is key to luring that next big fish.
The thing is: Rondo won't just follow the money. Not only does he fancy himself as one of the best he wants to play in a big market AND win. So there is only a small number of teams eligible. Of those teams the Celtics have a chance to position them in a competitive position relative to his western suitors in terms if both money and chance to win if he plays well.
He could take less to go to Houston or Dallas but that's likely mean throwing away legacy and taking less money. The pull of LA and Kobe is the one thing that worries me. There he could get money and fame.
Ultimately I think he ends up staying unless Boston feels strongly that Smart will be superior player in short order.
