If you were SVG, how would you fix our SF position?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Sat Oct 18, 2014 8:11 pm

If you were SVG (or Ron Jeremy), how would you fix our SF position? It is easy to say we suck at SF, but you know the assets we have, you know the rest of our team - what would you do to fix it?

Looking back, the ideal think would have been to trade Monroe last year. He would have been able to land us a legit SF, let Smith go to PF, and we wouldn't have to watch Monroe leave for nothing. Alas, that didn't happen and our best trade asset is gone.

First option - Draft next summer.
We need to see how this plays out. If we make the playoffs, then we will not have a good enough pick to get a quality SF. But if we're sucking, a lotto pick might help the situation.

Second option - Trade the rights to our draft pick next summer.
This sort of blows. We can't trade our pick since we traded it last year :banghead: (ugh). We can draft someone and then trade them. Unless we get a lottery pick, I can't imagine it being good enough to get an established SF.

Third option - Trade someone now.
Any takers for Jennings or Smith? I didn't think so. Drummond is untouchable. Maybe KCP could fetch us something, although he seems like a good piece of our future.

Fourth option - wait for free agency.
As much as I'd like to fix it now, we might have to suffer a bit this year, let a few guys roll off our cap, and overpay to get someone (besides Caron Butler).

Anyone got some ideas? I just don't see us fixing this anytime soon.

As much as I hate to say it,I think stan rides with this team until next year.He wants to see how the pieces fit and then will tweak the roster.

I think he will try and convince moose to stay (even tho I dont think that happens) by his coaching and how a team can really change just by that, weather we make the playoffs or not.

It might be frustrating, but by this time next year we could really be a threat. But that dosent mean we will have to suck like last year,we could win 40 games while staying competitive, which wont make it so brutal.

Realistically, we don't have any options to bring in an actual quality SF this year. Singler can hold down the fort most nights, but he's obviously limited. Once everyone gets healthy, we'll probably see meeks/KCP get some minutes there.

This coming summer, we'll have cap space and a pick. The contracts of the guys we don't want will also be 1 year shorter.

Pick one up in the draft next year and hope he develops.

Wait until off-season to try and sign Gerald Green or Harrison Barnes.

Draft if Monroe stays, FA if Monroe leaves.

(draft pf/ce if Monroe leaves)

I still don't believe we'll make the play-offs, so we'll be looking at the 9th -14th pick.

If we keep Monroe I think it will cost us $15M-$16M per season given his UFA status, so we'd only have 7-8M in remaining cap space - not enough for an impact starting SF.

Only way we could hope to upgrade SF this year is to trade our overpriced third wheel PF for somebody elses overpriced redundant SF.

No to trading our pick. Absolutely, under no circumstances.

No.

SVG rides this roster until the trade deadline and if we are out of the running or it appears we wont be able to resign Moose then we move Greg for some pieces.

We won't be getting any worthwhile pieces for Moose at that point because no contender is going to give up value for a rental.

If I were SVG, now that its become very clear that Monroe/Drummond look great together and that Greg is our best PF, I'd call up Sacramento right now and accept their Thompson/Williams for Josh Smith offer. Williams would expire next offseason, which would give us more $$ to acquire an acceptable SF after we max out Monroe next offseason and Thompson isn't a bad backup PF/C.

With the newly acquired $$, I would sign Gerald Green to start at SF and go after Middleton. We have a hole at PG and SF so with our draft pick, Id want us to take the best available PG or wing. I def do think we need to go after a SF in free agency.

2015-2016 Pistons
Jennings/Augustin/Dinwiddie
KCP/Meeks/Martin
Green/Middleton
Monroe/Thompson
Drummond/Gray

But I think if Moose shows no willingness to resign by the point then you take the best offer possible. If were still in the playoff hunt then you keep him but if not then you move him for the best package you can get since he would be gone after the year anyways.

Compared to not having a pick? You better effing believe it.

The only way I trade the pick is if we're getting proven young talent. And teams don't trade proven young talent.

I don't think you understand....the best offer possible will be an over the hill, overpaid player that does nothing for us. No team is going to offer us someone that will be useful. At that point, you're better off keeping him.

This team doesn't appear to be on the verge. It's not like one player is going to vault us into title contention. We have time to continue to develop a player or two. So trading for an average starting SF that has a couple years left, could put us back in this same situation by the time we're ready to contend. Might as well take the risk with the draft pick. Higher reward, same level of risk.
