And don't give me that "well Tyson stopped being a team player" when Shump played like crap all last year due to "rumors" of him being shopped for a damn trade.

I dunno. I don't think I ever gave Tyson all that much grief. He had a tough year last year but otherwise played pretty well for us.

I think moralewise - his own and the team's - he had to go. That and he was the most tradeable of the Big Expirings.

Because Shump is still young and unknown (to a degree or another) and because Woodson chose to keep JR with a big role which has arguably hurt Shump quite a bit.

Remember Shump had a very good playoffs against Boston and played well against Indiana too, for the most part, while JR spit the bit. Coming off development like that, other teams might have given Shump the keys. The Pacers did with Paul George and I'm not sure George is a superb talent OR that he didn't have plenty of ups and downs before he established himself. Pacers still turned it over to George (and/or Granger just got out of his way by injury) and it worked out well for them.

Woodson? He went back to JR full blown and Shump just seemed to fade away from there.

Good three point shooter, good dribble drive, good passer (he's actually better than Butler in this regard) but not enough of a handle to be a real superstar. Obviously, a pest on defense, like Butler and he can guard guys with length.

Now, there's a ceiling and a floor. He certainly isn't as good as Butler (can't finish, not as much versatility with his shot) but I never really _expected_ him to get there. I think that's where a lot of people get tripped up. Both about those threads and the players themselves.

What was JR's suspension, like 3 to 5 games? That's hardly a fair amount of time to judge him. And in the preseason, Shump probably saw that he hadn't moved to Square 2 with Woody. For a young player that's demoralizing.

Should Shump have been tough enough to fight through it? Maybe. But I wonder how George's development might have gone if Granger absolutely sucked in the playoffs, while George stepped up his game, and then George came back to camp the next year to find a crackhead still in front of him in the rotation. Would he have still broken through? Maybe. Maybe not.
