This guy must have the best agent in the history of pro sports. I don't know how he keeps getting contracts every single season, even non-guaranteed ones.

It wouldn't surprise me if Arenas was even better then him right now.

Miller's not a bad idea, but I'd wait till he gets cut a couple more times. At 21, he has potential, but... looking at his stats (putrid - and he did play 15 minutes a game for 50 plus games), he's so far away from being a legit NBA player - let someone else develop him. If he improves a lot, then consider going after him.

I'd think one of the key responsibilities of a FO is to keep a constantly updated list of the best players available (or likely to be available) at every position, and of course the list should be rated from top on down. Lets assume that Ernie's gang has such a list. In that case, we have to conclude that they regard JLIII as the best player available at the 1.

Well... maybe that isn't quite fair -- lets say they regard him as the best player available on a non-guaranteed contract. And it may be that they don't even intend keeping him into the regular season.

In the latter case, this is no big deal. But... it's still symptomatic of the problems with the organization, and it still reflects the fragility Ernie seems to build into his team by always "building" with veterans. With JLIII I believe we are now one of the 3 oldest teams in the NBA.

Symptomatic in the further sense that there seems *never* or almost never to be a young player on our team who is capable of surprising you, of seriously out-performing his draft position. (I write "probably" because it's possible Rice may be one such guy).

In other words, instead of an injury creating a chance for a young player to step up, it creates a crisis (small or large) which is addressed by way of *reaction*. Okafor goes down, and we have to grab our socks in order to have a starting center. Wall might be injured briefly, and we have to sign a non-entity.

Meanwhile, over at the Lakers, there are a ton of young players who have a chance to show well -- including Jordan Clarkson whom we turned our nose up at in the last draft. Now... I realize that the Los Angeles Lakers are not an elite franchise with the long history of success that we have under the regime of Ernie Groundfog, but still....

Jordan Clarkson would look mighty fine in a Wizards jersey right now.

Ehh...I guess those round trip tickets to Poland were important too.

Well, the Lakers are certainly not an elite team in 2014...which may be why a young, inexperienced guy like Jordan Clarkson has a chance to get some quality PT this year. Heck, he might even be a starter. The Zards are in a different situation this year than the Lakers...and that's a good thing.

You can't have it all, but Ed Davis is looking good and Khem would have been nice as well. But no roster spots for them sadly. Not when we need guard help.

I wish rosters were bigger.

Meanwhile, the Bucks signed a young 6'11 240 pound athletic big (Michael Eric) to compete for their last roster spot, and he's done very well the last 2 games. I'd rather the last guy on the roster be someone to develop for the future. Eric is from Nigeria and hadn't played basketball before HS. He played at Temple and became a rebounder/defender there. He may end up being cut, but it's generally smart to take a chance on potential at that point.

Sorry, but those are a couple of shallow responses. We are now among the very oldest teams in the NBA. After next year, we have exactly 4 good players signed (Gortat, Wall, Beal & Porter -- and that's making significant assumptions about the progress Beal and Porter will make), and basically no one else on the roster (yet face a significant salary basis).

That's what we've managed to do in the 5 years since we began to "rebuild". And even that required us to get lucky twice w/ the ping pong balls for 2 of those 4 players.

Every team that looks to be on the way *up* over the coming 2-4 years has a roster with significant youth. Instead we have age. And fragility via injury. And the oh so great achievement this has bought us? We won 44 games in the weakest Eastern conference in a decade or more. And, oh boy, we got past a team whose best player was injured and whose second best player had been traded a month or so earlier. Great stuff. Lets all jump up and down, ok?
