I mean, he was 16th in LF WAR last year and that's probably going to be his best year with us.

17M for a LF is just laughable unless he's an elite slugger. 13M is still pushing it for me. Seth Smith just had a similar season and got 6M a year. LAD gave Scott Van Slyke like 250 ABs and he bested Melky. Sam Fuld can't do anything except catch baseballs and he bested Melky.

You can find LFs anywhere.

I'm not sure I agree with the last part... in the sense that I don't think AA could find a median LF if Melky leaves. I like Melky, but the main reason I want to keep him is that I feel the choice is Melky or some very marginal guy that we get as a "value" and that ends up starting opening day over someone better that still has options left... just

Again for me it just comes down to how you want to use that precious money. You give Russell Martin 15M a year and deal Navarro. That's a net expenditure of 10M a year for a player with double the impact of Melky.

You could sign Aoki and put him in LF for maybe half of what Melky makes and he's going to be much better defensively, on the bases and put up a similar OBP.

Good point, If there is a willingness to spend that money elsewhere than thats cool. Lineup production is lineup production. I just worry that AA has more spending leverage with ownership to "keep the band together" than he does in brining in new talent.

Martin appears headed to Chicago Cubs. It just seems as if three years is the new five or six for the Jays. It's okay to be prudent, but the market is ever-changing. More money is coming in from TV contracts. So far this off-season, all we have done is subtract money, while initially offering Melky a three-year deal he can refuse. If there is a suitable plan B with the current roster (sans Melky), I would be open to it, but if the intent for next season is to tread water as a 75-win team. while using Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion to sell tickets and boost TV ratings, it's just a classic waste of good value that could be used to accelerate a rebuild.

On PTS today they reported that Melky is being pursued by the Tigers and the Jays.

Crazy how in a couple hours things can change so much. Not your fault Dahg, I would have never anticipated a player like Martin to sign here.

as of November 20th Wilner says Toronto signing Melky to a contract extension might still be in play (starts at about the 0:38 mark).

Wiretap: "The Jays might not sign Cabrera."

But seriously, this is an update from previous reports alleging that Wilner said he is all but gone.
