You could probably kiss every single current offensive assistant on staff goodbye even if they wanted to stay because I don't see many of them being great fits with Mike and he's been known to stick with guys in his circle. A lot of fans want to see that anyway.

With all of that said, if you gave Shanahan some time, there's a higher chance than many other names that he'd leave you in a better situation with potentially a clearer foundation than many of the other potential names would give you.

Whether it's fair or not I have a hard time listening to former players advocate for a coach being the right fit, or at least one of many good fits, because (insert name here) is somebody they worked with in the past and had success with. It's not completely fair but there's just always been something about it that's bugged me when I hear a lot of former players talk. In this instance, Shanahan wouldn't bother me like some other guys who have had ties to 49ers players would.

I also wonder if Baalke and Shanahan would be a good fit together. I could also see Shanahan wanting Baalke's influence to be reduced and I'm not sure if at this point in his career that Baalke would want to take on somebody like that either.

I ended up saying more about it than I was going to. I have a lot left I could say, too.

The only offensive assistant I'd want to retain is Rathman as RBs coach...On defense, I would love to retain Fangio, Tomsula, and maybe Donatell.

They should both have plenty of money so where is the drive? Maybe Shanahan is mostly interested in getting his son another job.

Would either man play second fiddle to Jed and Baalke?

For Holmgren, I think he would really like to coach his hometown team and from what I've heard, he isn't going to just take any HC job out there. I also believe these are highly competitive people that love football. Problem as you mention is whether they would be willing to leave personal decisions up to Balke.

From what Holmgren has said, he only wants to be coach. At this point in his life, he does not want dual duties.

Not only second fiddle to Baalke on personnel, maybe even having less say that Paarag, who's not even a football guy but thinks his data analytics can be used to determine who will be good players.

While I wouldn't mind having either of those coaches, I wouldn't want to give them control over personnel decisions and would rather have someone else if either is demanding that. I know Marathe crunches cap numbers but I was not aware he makes those types of player judgements. Not implying he doesn't because I don't know.

Holmgren is only interested in being coach from what I read. No thank you to Holmgren as personnel man. He sucked at that in Seattle until they stripped him of it, and was even worse in Cleveland.

I don't care how he looked in 2 meaningless games. I've seen plenty to show me he's clueless out there. The dude SUCKS at playing quarterback. If he were on a team like the Dolphins or the Bills he'd be out of the league by now (or a backup somewhere).

I disagree, overall he has looked good since 2012. That is when utilized properly.

Notice how good QBs never have seem to give the impression they're not being properly utilized.

The design was not the problem. Kaepernick doesn't see open receivers. He was off to a quick start just like other running QBs were early (Newton, RGIII), but they were all figured out. Ever since then he's been downright bad. Maybe not Geno Smith bad but still bad.

I think I am in a time warp. I am back at ESPN and every thread turns into a bash Alex Smith thread,

On second thought, I do not want Shanhan. He runs a zone blocking scheme which requires smaller, more athletic linemen, our OL is big and physcial so it would not work....Holmgren though, I would consider.

My point was that the head coach doesn't matter if you don't have a good QB (or a defense so legendary that it can carry the team to a SB w/ a really bad QB, but there's only been a couple of those ever).

Notice how Pete Carroll & Bill Belichick didn't look that great until they got their QBs (I always liked Pete though).

Even a great QB like Harbaugh wasn't enough w/ crappy QB play. There are a few guys I wouldn't mind coaching the Niners, but unless they get a good QB I'm not getting my hopes up.

Montana and Young may be under the delusion that York wants the best coach from a football standpoint.

But it's clear that football considerations alone is not his top priority.

There's also guys who are passionate about football and coaching.
