You could probably kiss every single current offensive assistant on staff goodbye even if they wanted to stay because I don't see many of them being great fits with Mike and he's been known to stick with guys in his circle. A lot of fans want to see that anyway.
With all of that said, if you gave Shanahan some time, there's a higher chance than many other names that he'd leave you in a better situation with potentially a clearer foundation than many of the other potential names would give you.
Whether it's fair or not I have a hard time listening to former players advocate for a coach being the right fit, or at least one of many good fits, because (insert name here) is somebody they worked with in the past and had success with. It's not completely fair but there's just always been something about it that's bugged me when I hear a lot of former players talk. In this instance, Shanahan wouldn't bother me like some other guys who have had ties to 49ers players would.
I also wonder if Baalke and Shanahan would be a good fit together. I could also see Shanahan wanting Baalke's influence to be reduced and I'm not sure if at this point in his career that Baalke would want to take on somebody like that either.
I ended up saying more about it than I was going to. I have a lot left I could say, too.
The only offensive assistant I'd want to retain is Rathman as RBs coach...On defense, I would love to retain Fangio, Tomsula, and maybe Donatell.
