In that case they would be part of a package. The last time we tried moving a 1st to help our playoff push we ended up with Tyrus Thomas.
Plus it wasn't too long ago that we lost 10 games in a row. If Kemba's knee cyst, or whatever is it, blows up our season or Al relegates Biz to 8mpg there's always a chance that's the "real" 2014-2015 Charlotte Hornets. In that case we need the lottery pick anyway.
I'm probably more conservative than most, but I would only trade 1sts in a Love/Harden-type scenario. Otherwise you hold onto them at all costs. They are essentially the only way to ever land a young player with potential locked into a cap-friendly deal. I'm not impressed by the Wizards strategy simply because the team they have now has essentially no chance of winning a title with the current team. I'd rather grow our core slowly than commit to a big splash trade UNLESS it's the fast-track to contention. If it's the fast-track to the 5th seed I pass every time, but I understand given the lack of success the franchise has had being in the second round might be worth it to many fans and I respect that.
I want joe johnson, but actually for a lot of reasons you said (obviously don't give up any good young assets to get him). I think he keeps the Hornets respectable, solidly gets us in the playoffs, plus becomes a major trade asset next year when he is on that huge expiring. I think a 24 million expiring is worth more than a late first round pick to be honest. We could then use his contract to make a big trade next year, or worst case scenario let him expire and spend the cap space smartly (hahaha) in the summer of 2016.
Its not like Joe Johnson is Tyrus Thomas. He's an established 7 time all star with 13 years of evidence to back his game up. I'd rather have him than another late draft pick. I don't think he's the fast track to multiple years of the five seed its sort of a rental. Maybe we could resign him on a fair contract down the line or move him in a really big upgrade.
I should have prefaced all that by saying i'm not a believer in the title or bust mentality.
trust me i know all about the Tyrus Thomas trade. Hell i was in it.
