Bulls Board BAT (Build-A-Team) - Sign-up thread (2 Replacement needed)

Post#1 » by SimonFish » Mon Feb 23, 2015 2:45 am

EDIT: As two posters are apparently not too active, I would like some replacement to step in place of them, just in case.

Judging from my last thread to test the water (viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1373193), most people are interested in building a team from scratch through fantasy draft. So - that's the game mode.

You can set your own goals when building the team. It can be any of the following (or both):
1. Build to win now (as in the 2014-2015 season)
2. Build to win in the future (5 year window)

To make things more interesting, I will implement the following elements in the game:

1. You can trade your players after taking them. However, when you make trades, you have to take contracts, salary cap and lux tax lines into account, and hence the 150%, 125% and $5m rule apply. There will be a separate trade thread and I will approve the trades after checking the numbers.

2. Every team will have one first round pick and one second round pick for each of the upcoming NBA draft (up till 2019). If you want to win now, you may wish to package your picks with your players to trade for an upgrade. And vice versa - If you wish to build a team for the future, you can stockpile picks.

3. After every team has drafted the players and completed the trades, I will ask everyone to submit a rank the teams in order. Combining their lists, I will making a playoffs seeding. Everyone will have a chance to vote in every playoffs matchup and determine the eventual champion of the 2014/15 season.

4. If you build the team for the future, no worries - I will ask all of the participants to vote which team is best suited for the future.

If you are interested in the game, please leave your username and email below. I hope there will be 30 participants, but if we can not gather 30 in a week, we may settle with 24.

Please feel free to ask your questions, or suggest other elements that you like, as you sign up the game. I shall address your needs asap.

Q&A:

GimmeDat wrote:what's the role of our emails - do we do trade proposals through them to other players?

Yes.

GimmeDat wrote:Are everyone's picks of the same value or do they differ in quality based on seeding?

At the start of the game, everyone's picks should be of the same value as we build each of our team from scratch. However, as we are in the process of playing the game, some teams may be better than the others, and their picks may have less value as the game goes on.

GimmeDat wrote:What sort of time-frame does something like this usually run for?

It depends on how fast the fantasy draft is going. I am envisioning a 12 round draft, and we may do 2 rounds per day. So it takes 6 days for draft.

Then it may take a week or two for us to trades.

And a few days to do the playoffs and write-ups.

All said and done, it should take us 3 weeks to a month.

RebuildaBulls wrote:Sounds interesting, how does this work?

We will build a team from the scratch - by having 12 rounds of fantasy draft. After the draft is completed, we can trade the players and assets we have, to build the best team for now, for the future, or both.

If you are interested in playing the game, please leave your name and email below! :)

dacheezwhiz wrote: This is considering all active contracts, correct? i.e., so that if I draft Kevin Love he can still opt out next year, or if I take Dario Saric he can potentially stay oversees for a couple years? Or if we wanted to pick up somebody like Ray Allen without a current contract? (sorry if this level of detail is on the way)

Brybeck01 wrote: using contracts may complicate things?

Both questions are related to contracts so I'll put it in one answer.

The main reason why I want to take contracts into account is hope to the game more interesting. As I suggested in the OP, you may build a team to win now, or to build a team to win in a future. In the latter way, you may take the tanking approach by drafting expiring contracts (and some bad players as well) to guarantee yourself a high lotto pick and also max capspace in the offseason. If the participants stay active, I may even consider continuing this game by including the 2015 NBA draft and 2015 FA market.

And to answer dacheezwhiz's 3 questions, yes Kevin Love can opt out, Saric may potential stay overseas, and if you want to pick Ray Allen (or other current FAs), you can take them by signing them to a vet min contract.

2Chainz wrote:Before we move on can we take a lot at the last one. We put in a lot of work and then there's no ending to the whole thing. I'd be down to do it again though

I think TheSuzerain was in charge of the last one. As things stand, I think the game had died. However, I guarantee this game won't as I will put 100% monitoring and commishing it.

ChicagoSportsFan21 wrote: It mentions that your planning on doing 2 rounds per day. Is that realistic? It took my game about a month to draft (144 picks), and your planning on doing 360 picks in 6 days. I'm all for it if it takes 3-4 weeks, but I don't want it to drag on for a few months and then never end. Will there be some sort of deadline for each pick, because it can drag on pick to pick if some members aren't active and don't check everyday especially with how many people being involved in this draft. I have created plenty of drafts before where this could be/was an issue. Hmm...to join or not.

Now that you mention it, I think it is better to do 1 round per day for Round 1 to 6 (so that people can have more time to decide and think about the core of their teams). However, starting from Round 7, I will definitely cut it short and make it two rounds per day.

I will definitely set deadline for each pick and will urge everyone to send me the list of players that they want. If they don't I will select the players for them.

As I said, I will keep the game in track and target to finish the game within 3-4 weeks, like every other BAT games.

So, don't hesitate and sign up! :)

MGB8 wrote:If no one else wants them, I will represent my woeful hometown 76ers....

Sure. My initial thought was to randomly assign (as every team starts from scratch anyway). However, if anyone has any special preference, I will try to accommodate.

I am from the knick board. I have participated in 5 BAT's on the knick board and one on the orlando board. I would love to be a part of this one. Here's my email address: gorillalane@gmail(dot)com
feel free to contact me anytime...

Welcome! If you know other posters from your board who are interested, please invite them too! :) We have 21 now and still need 3 to 9 players.

ChicagoSportsFan21 wrote:Will there be a randomized draft order and snake rounds in order for the game to be fair?

Yes, that's exactly what I contemplated to do.

Sure, welcome to the game! :)

I'll tentatively put my hand up - haven't done a BAT before so if we could elaborate on how it all works, that'd be great, and I'm sure would encourage more people to join in. Sounds like fun though.

For instance, what's the role of our emails - do we do trade proposals through them to other players? Are everyone's picks of the same value or do they differ in quality based on seeding? What sort of time-frame does something like this usually run for?

Sorry, just trying to get my head around it all. Anyway, you can count me in -

Really want to do it but my baby girl is due to be born this week. I think I may not have the time.
KC: Do you still think you're a championship-caliber team?
Gar: I never said that and correct me if I'm wrong.
KC: You were asked that question at the news conference announcing Thibodeau's dismissal and you answered yes
