The Cavs had back to back 60+ win seasons. That is hardly a disaster. The Heat didn't do that when Lebron was there. The Heat were just lucky that the east was so weak which gave them basically a free pass to the finals.
Ferry wasn't able to land another star but he did a good job getting affordable role players that fit with lebron.
Honestly, I don't have any dislike for people with your opinion, but its a complete lack of understanding nuance and context that leads to opinions like this one, and similar logic is really why we're in the situation that we are now.
Ferry was handed a team that had a top 10 all time player in his prime and that vast majority of roleplayers that were on that team are out of the league--Daniel Gibson, Anthony Parker, Delonte West, Wally Zscerbiak, Larry Hughes, Damon Jones, Jamario Moon...
Yea, great, they won a lot. BUT they didn't come close to putting the sort of talent around him that took place in Miami and Cleveland Part 2, and it resulted in LeBron leaving the team.
The talent he put around LeBron was completely mediocre. It's the fact that LeBron is such an unbelievable player that they were as successful as they were.
Again, I always point to Sam Presti. Grunsfeld would have been perfectly fine sitting on a team that was winning CONSTANTLY every year and going deep in the Western Conference playoffs. He would have kept Reggie Jackson and simply let him expire, or maybe pushed a sign and trade in order to get a TPE. Presti said to hell with that, despite us already having a decent shot at going deep in the playoffs, lets make moves to get even better.
The point is, you want a guy who has his finger prints all over a roster. Not just a guy who plugs in a few holes or adds a few roleplayers. You want guys who have truly truly shown an ability to build a franchise from its most basic level--quality drafting, quality hiring, quality trading, good philosophy.
