As far as Ashley and Tarc maybe going, that may have created the pause here......would you rather lose both and get Rabb? Or have one stay and not get him?
http://www.azdesertswarm.com/recruiting ... nouncementEarlier this week, Ivan Rabb, No. 2 power forward, No. 7 overall in the nation, trimmed his list just two: Arizona and California. These have been the clear favorites to land Rabb for quite some time, but he just made it official in the formality of the recruiting process. This week, Rabb's high school, Bishop O'Dowd, was playing the Open Division California State Championship vs Mater Dei High School, Stanley Johnson's stomping grounds, where he won four-straight state championships.
Rabb's announcement was expected to come after the championship game. With California as the clear favorite and the game being played at Haas Pavilion, home of the Golden Bears, the entire coaching staff made an appearance, alongside many Cal fans anticipating the announcement.
Bishop O'Dowd topped Mater Dei thanks to a made free throw by Rabb in overtime with just .8 seconds left on the clock. Cameras swarmed Rabb in anticipation of his decision. "I was planning on making it today, but I'm not sure right now," Rabb told reporters. "I don't want to rush into a decision... I just need to talk it over with my family."
Now, this could be the sequence of events Arizona needs. Maybe, just maybe, after the Arizona loss, Rabb learned that Brandon Ashley and possibly Kaleb Tarczewski will be declaring for the NBA Draft, making him the focal point of Arizona's already No. 2 ranked recruiting class. Complete speculation, but it could happen.
Many of you are probably saying, why would Rabb choose California over Arizona? National exposure, compete for a national title, state of the art facilities, strong fan base, what else could he want?
Well, the Oakland product does prefer to stay close to home, which is Cal's best selling point. But as of right now, California is working on building a monster recruiting class that could even top Arizona's. With a commitment from Rabb, California would be extremely close to landing Caleb Swanigan (No. 4 center, No. 14 overall) as well as Jaylen Brown (No. 1 small forward, No. 2 overall).
With those three in place and the return of Tyrone Wallace, Jordan Mathews and Jabari Bird, Cal could suddenly challenge Arizona for the Pac-12 next season.
Rabb said he will announce his decision soon, so expect it to be sometime this week. But as of now, California seems as if they will land the No. 7 recruit, barring some sort of mind blowing epiphany Rabb has.
