I just finished my degree on Electronics Engineering. Really? Im actually looking at the oil and gas industry there in australia, few friends of mine who work there told me it could be good. Life as a fresh grad is kinda sucky trying to decide what best to do next.
I'm in West Australia and it's pretty terrible at the moment, especially in the oil and gas industry. Mining boom is down at the moment here, which means less demand for engineers. Heaps of fresh grads that cant find nothing. Way too many graduate engineers, with not enough jobs. However if you got connections within the industry you might find it okay.
That's always been the case for engineers hasn't it? The mining boom opened up a lot of new jobs but historically, Australia has never had a big infrastructure sector so engineering grads looking for jobs or internships have always had a hard time.
Pretty much. Although its historically bad currently, hopefully things will start looking brighter soon enough.
I chose Civil and Structural because out of all the evils, it's probably the lesser of the evils due to the fact that, unlike other streams such as Chemical and Mechanical, there's alot of Civil jobs that are not directly related to the mining climate. Jobs in Main Roads Authorities and PTA, Local Councils and Government etc..
We shall see if that decision pays off though.
