If it's Mudiay, I'll be totally shocked. Hinkie just got rid of a PG with virtually the same skillset who was rookie of the year and only 23 yrs old, so for him to turn around and use a #3 pick on another PG who also can't shoot just doesn't make sense. History shows that guys who come into the league with no jumper usually never develop one or only improve slightly which means Hinkie would be moving laterally at the position, not improving it (ie replacing one non-shooter PG with another non-shooter PG), which would essentially be a waste of a #3 pick. Clearly, the doing away of MCW indicates that Hinkie is looking to go in a different direction at the PG position and that most likely involves a player who can actually shoot/do things that MCW can't.
That said, just based upon logic, I think it'll either be Russell (to bring in a PG with elite shooting and passing...much different than MCW), Okafor (if Russell is off the board already and Hinkie wants top notch trade bait or Embiid insurance), OR Porzingis (if Hinkie is going for high risk/high reward).
Two ways to look at it..
Either that or..Hinkie is inclined to pick MCW type PGs Over Trey Burke type PGs (not saying Mudiay = MCW). Maybe selecting Mudiay is similar to Spurs selecting Kawhi, where improved shooting easily made him a special player. And I'm pretty sure MCW was traded because of his upside+contract concerns more than opting for a different direction.
Spurs, Rockets and our current drafting record shows that shooting is a skill that can be improved.
Hinkie might go "moneyball" on Mudiay because there's a negative sentiment in the value of his shooting where most people lazily just labels him a bad shooter and not take consideration that..
1.) he's a confident shooter
2.) his shooting mechanics isn't broke
3.) he shot well from the 3pt range in CBA
4.) he has shown improvement with his shooting after his stint at CBA.
With a top 3 pick, I also think he won't be looking just on who's the better shooting PG. But more of who can be the better player 5 to 10 years down the road. And our current draft trend, even at the PG spot, might also lean that he might be more inclined to a guy who has potential to have better rebs+stls+blk value than shooting %, where on paper, Mudiay could be a superior prospect in this category.
The problem with MCW is that, unlike Tony Parker or James Harden, he can't shoot, he can't create and get to the rim.
Mudiay can create and get to the rim, and current trend shows that in time, he can be a good shooter.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.
