If Russell is at #4 I trade KCP, #8, 2016 #1, and our 2nd rounder.

i don't think we can trade 2 consecutive picks and i think KCP is enough to move but idk if there's a need with THJ

You can trade the rights to the player and the future pick.

Would rather stick at 8 and keep all our assets.

AKA draft the player for that team. It happens all the time.

If I'm SVG I'm exploring this option with either reggie or Jennings IF Deangelo Russell is available at the 4th spot. If not then the idea of trading up would be pointless as I feel anybody else isn't worth giving up based on value.

Reggie is a free agent. He can't be traded unless it's a sign and trade, and that can't happen until well after the draft.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

This is where I'm at. We have possibilities in the backcourt and are barren at the three. Luckily, one of the best players available at 8 should be a three. The position doesn't scream out for a trade up or down.

^ This is all very true, reasonable, and sensible. BUT (and we're talking a Sir Mix-a-Lot sized big BUT here) ...

... if SVG believes Russell is James Harden 2.0, you trade up for him and figure out SF via free agency over the next few years. If he thinks Russell is a good starter but not a huge upgrade from KCP, sure, stay put and keep your assets. But if you've got a chance to make a young trio of (effectively) Reggie, (James Harden) & Drummond? You do it 11 times out of 10.

Bottom line, ELITE talent trumps need every time; if SVG thinks Russell is truly an elite talent and he's got a chance to acquire him, you pull the trigger.

oddly enough i didn't know this. or maybe i did and forgot. Its a lot to risk drafting for another team on a strictly verbal promise

Verbal promises are all GMs have though. You go back on your word and pretty soon you're rep is busted
