There is a such thing as being unreasonably positive.....there is also a thing known as being unreasonably negative. Of course the West is stacked but if DJ comes back Clippers will be on the short list of contenders, which is about all you can ask for as a fan. Exiting in the second round again is a possibility as it is for any West contender but it will only be because the West is stacked, not because of any real or imagined shortcomings of the players.
Oh please. We've seen the Thunder and Warriors rise up and get to (and even win, in the Warriors' case) the Finals in less time than it's taken this team to get past the second round. The Harden Rockets have made the WCF more recently than the CP3/Blake/DJ Clippers... just think about that for a second. They had a 3-1 lead and couldn't do it. It isn't happening with this core, with the "Big Three" all making max money. And it's not because of a stacked conference or any other excuses, it's because the GM, coaches and players are not good enough. Bringing back DJ means overpaying for five more years of the same tired routine.
It's also harder to be okay with second-round exits when the team's history is as bad as it is. If we had a bunch of championship banners in the rafters, it would be easier to handle the playoff flameouts, but for the Clippers, it just feels like more failures piled on a long list of them.
I don't see anything wrong with the Clippers core. Now they do have issues but I think the heartbreak of this season will seal any issues. Big Baby said it best. He said something I said watching the Rockets vs Clippers. That was they went into that series feeling they could sweep the Rockets. Gave away games because of over confidence.
I don't see Deandre as an overpay. You could make a case he was a top 10 player last year. He had the second most WS on the Clippers team. They played 16 points better on offense when DJ was in the game. He might be the best PNR big in the league right now. I don't think people get how great it is to have a big that sets a great screen and can finish so well at the rim. I think many think just sign someone else and they do it just as well. It doesn't work that way. He was the best rebounder in the sport. Maybe a top 3 rim protector. If the Clippers just went out and got some perimeter defenders they be the best team in the league. I don't get this idea that they need to blow it up or that DJ isn't worth the money. If your going to run PNR basketball outside of Anthony Davis and maybe Dwight Howard you cant do better than DJ. Meaning he is insanely impactful on both offense and defense.
