It's obvious there's a discord between the two and, if you think about it, it's not really surprising. Chris Paul is said to be as demanding of his teammates as Kobe Bryant. What we've seen of him on the court seems to confirm that. DeAndre Jordan has never taken criticism well whether it's from his coaches and teammates at Texas A&M, Vinny Del Negro, or now Chris Paul. Chris' main focus is winning while you have DJ daydreaming about free agency during the freaking playoffs. Yeah, you can say that they're not on the same page.
It was also said that Chris and Blake Griffin had issues with each other, but that has since quieted down, especially since they've worked together on entertainment collaborations like BGCP3TV in HD. I side with CP3 in the discord with DJ, but both seem to realize they need the other when they may have taken the other for granted before. Chris must appreciate DJ setting picks, which he is being recognized as excelling in by league observers, along with the threat of an athletic big man who can finish at the rim so well. Likewise, DeAndre has to see that his leading the league in FG% is attributed to having the best PG in the game feeding him.
Doc has gone on record in acknowledging that tension existed between the two, so it can be safe to say that the discord existed (past tense?). Now, of course, the team is saying it's not that big a deal and blown out of proportion. Bill Simmons and other media insiders have mentioned this tiff in the past. Most of us--not me--dismissed this as sensationalist trouble-making but it reached the point where DJ actually committed to departing for another team with his agent supposedly attempting to extort the Clippers into trading away Chris Paul.
Now the alleged threat by Dan Fegan may have been a scheme to push his personal agenda on behalf of his buddy Mark Cuban, but you have to think it was exploiting an existing issue. This may be a fabrication of the media and league participants, but it would have to have been well orchestrated years in advance.
It seems obvious to me that there is something to the rift between DJ and CP3, but again, a lot of that is due to Paul's domineering oncourt approach and Jordan's immaturity. Maybe the silver lining in the DJ-to-Dallas drama is that these two realize how much they need each other. However, I don't know how easy it will be for either to change. Having Griffin, Doc, and now Paul Pierce as mediators may help, but frankly, DJ needs to get his head out of his butt more than anything.
Instead of fretting so much over being a bigger contributor on offense when he can't be a factor late into games because of his free-throw shooting, he should focus on doing things to help the team win like getting over his mental handicap with free throws. In other words, put the team ahead of himself. Maybe this honeymoon period from his close call with a life-altering mistake will allow him to finally focus on what's really important now that he doesn't have to constantly daydream of greener pastures. CP3 could probably use a bit more diplomacy, but seriously, the guy did everything he could to carry us in the playoffs while his teammates and GM-coach failed him: Blake's crunch-time turnovers, J.J.'s missing shot, DJ's FTs, Doc's roster construction and substitutions, and Jamal being Jamal.
