Marcus Camby was in the locker room with the guys before the press conference. He's pretty close to DJ and his family, so it's cool to see that kind of support.

Doc looks real sad and lonely in the first pic

Yeah, I noticed that too. With the exception of the brief screen graphic of the roster's depth chart, there was nary a mention of Jamal Crawford. Of particular note was Doc's comment about how he wants both Austin and Lance to think of themselves as point guards in sharing ball-handling duties while they're on the court together since it makes it tougher for the defense to focus on one player primarily bringing the ball upcourt. I've been a big advocate of such an approach where both backcourt players have the capability to handle the ball and run an offense similar to Stockton and Hornacek of the Jazz back in the day. Doc also went on to reiterate how effective Lance is as a "downhill" player and that he should be pushing the pace when he's in the game.

Also, with a team full of competent ball-handlers and passers, I'd like to see us emulate a little bit of what the Sacramento Kings used to do with Bibby, Divac, Webber, and Stojakovic fluidly moving the ball around. Unfortunately, we're probably lacking in the passing ability to play such a style at the 3 and 5 spots. Still, with CP3, Blake, J.J., J-Smoove, Stephenson, and Junior Rivers, we do have plenty of good passers who can work that style with lineup variations.

Going back to Jamal, it seems clear to me that his omission from the conversation during the press conference indicates that he's on the way out. Doc did say that, while he valued roster flexibility (for late additions), he will keep an eye out for other moves to materialize towards the end of the offseason as free agency closes out.

Completely agree.

I am wondering now with Cleveland likely moving on from JR Smith if they maybe gave Doc a call about Jamal Crawford.

I enjoyed watching the press conference and was surprised I could watch it here in PA. Thanks to NBATV :)
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

anybody have an opinion on the DeAndre-Chris thing?

They denied it before.
Then everybody not inside the house said Chris apologized to him.
Now they're both saying it's not like that.

Can we just know whether the **** is true or not?

Where There's Smoke, There's Fire

It's obvious there's a discord between the two and, if you think about it, it's not really surprising. Chris Paul is said to be as demanding of his teammates as Kobe Bryant. What we've seen of him on the court seems to confirm that. DeAndre Jordan has never taken criticism well whether it's from his coaches and teammates at Texas A&M, Vinny Del Negro, or now Chris Paul. Chris' main focus is winning while you have DJ daydreaming about free agency during the freaking playoffs. Yeah, you can say that they're not on the same page.

It was also said that Chris and Blake Griffin had issues with each other, but that has since quieted down, especially since they've worked together on entertainment collaborations like BGCP3TV in HD. I side with CP3 in the discord with DJ, but both seem to realize they need the other when they may have taken the other for granted before. Chris must appreciate DJ setting picks, which he is being recognized as excelling in by league observers, along with the threat of an athletic big man who can finish at the rim so well. Likewise, DeAndre has to see that his leading the league in FG% is attributed to having the best PG in the game feeding him.

Doc has gone on record in acknowledging that tension existed between the two, so it can be safe to say that the discord existed (past tense?). Now, of course, the team is saying it's not that big a deal and blown out of proportion. Bill Simmons and other media insiders have mentioned this tiff in the past. Most of us--not me--dismissed this as sensationalist trouble-making but it reached the point where DJ actually committed to departing for another team with his agent supposedly attempting to extort the Clippers into trading away Chris Paul.

Now the alleged threat by Dan Fegan may have been a scheme to push his personal agenda on behalf of his buddy Mark Cuban, but you have to think it was exploiting an existing issue. This may be a fabrication of the media and league participants, but it would have to have been well orchestrated years in advance.

It seems obvious to me that there is something to the rift between DJ and CP3, but again, a lot of that is due to Paul's domineering oncourt approach and Jordan's immaturity. Maybe the silver lining in the DJ-to-Dallas drama is that these two realize how much they need each other. However, I don't know how easy it will be for either to change. Having Griffin, Doc, and now Paul Pierce as mediators may help, but frankly, DJ needs to get his head out of his butt more than anything.

Instead of fretting so much over being a bigger contributor on offense when he can't be a factor late into games because of his free-throw shooting, he should focus on doing things to help the team win like getting over his mental handicap with free throws. In other words, put the team ahead of himself. Maybe this honeymoon period from his close call with a life-altering mistake will allow him to finally focus on what's really important now that he doesn't have to constantly daydream of greener pastures. CP3 could probably use a bit more diplomacy, but seriously, the guy did everything he could to carry us in the playoffs while his teammates and GM-coach failed him: Blake's crunch-time turnovers, J.J.'s missing shot, DJ's FTs, Doc's roster construction and substitutions, and Jamal being Jamal.

Let's hope no Clippers haters see this, they will bring up the nepotism narrative and how Austin is daddy's little boy, which is totally untrue!

Blogtable: Biggest impact for Clippers?

Steve Aschburner, NBA.com:Lance Stephenson, because he has the most to prove. I’m an admirer of Paul Pierce, but enough already with the “He’ll show them how to win” claims — the Clippers’ main guys shouldn’t need those lessons or a motivational coach at this point. Josh Smith sounds like he’s bummed that his semi-redemptive stay in Houston didn’t pay off bigger and might start rationalizing his downward career arc. That leaves Stephenson, who is hitting his prime and desperately needs to put last year’s Charlotte embarrassment behind him. If Doc Rivers, Chris Paul and Pierce have the patience, and Stephenson finds the dedication, there’s remarkable talent there in need of focusing and tapping.

John Schuhmann, NBA.com: Stephenson could have the biggest negative impact if he shoots as poorly as he did last season in Charlotte and becomes a locker room distraction like he was two years ago in Indiana. But though he’s also a poor shooter, Smith could help the Clippers where they need it most: on defense. The Clips had the No. 1 offense in the league last year, but ranked 15th defensively. And the defense was at its worst with reserves on the floor. So if Smith can help shore it up in key moments, that could go a long way in helping the Clips contend for a top seed in the West, while keeping the starters fresh.

Sekou Smith, NBA.com: While I believe both Josh Smith and Lance Stephenson will average more minutes than Paul Pierce, I don’t think there is any doubt that Pierce will have the biggest impact on the Clippers next season. His leadership skills and the things that he brings to a team, both tangible and intangible, far outweigh whatever the other two guys will bring to the situation. Just look at the tone he set in the locker room in Washington if you need proof. Pierce is the ultimate competitor and still has enough left in the tank to serve as a crunch-time assassin. He’s fearless, even in the twilight of his career. And with a three-year deal, he knows he’s in this for the duration and not just a one-year rental. His impact could be the difference between a Clippers team that falters in the conference semifinals and one that finally breaks through to the next level.
