I have no problem with any of the players you listed DH'ing today, except Tulo, for all the reasons I mentioned previously. It's especially bad without Travis or Valencia around to at least give another MI option off the bench. Sorry but you'll never convince me that this was a good idea today.
MI is middle infield? Valencia isn't one of those. I'm not sure why many people keep bringing this up.
Tulo could have been sore today or the team felt like it was good day to rest him at DH. You're looking at it from a one game perspective instead of thinking about it on a larger scale, which is more important and how few of amount of games this would be a factor in, somewhere around %15-20 of Tulo's games will be at DH.
Using the bench is a different topic but the idea that Tulowitzki should sit for Colabello isn't going to happen, but he(cola) will certaintly DH or play 1b finding at bats like he has most of the season(in other games) when better hitters are in the field already.
Finally, Gibbons could have pinch hit at the end there in the 9th inning. We were down 3 runs and had options on the bench, he probably should have pinch hit and worried about middle infield options after the game was potentially tied OR they lose still.
Having MI options doens't mean much when pinch hitting when you're losing you will do anything to tie it. It just comes down to weather whoever is at the plate is considered a better matchup than whoever is on the bench, unless that bench player is strictly on a day off.
We only have 6 'afternoon after night' games left, one of them at the end of the season. Would imagine we only see Tulo DH 2-3 times for the final month out of our remaining 35 games this year + playoffs..
