Is this based on 1B only?
I read on baseball reference that Smoak's is -0.1
I assume all 1B have negative dWar because they very rarely have the opportunity to do something above average.
Yeah 1b only for the stats I listed for 2015. Didn't include LF for Cola.
dwar uses range factor but also includes other positions played during the year as well. So Cola's dwar would include his play in left field this year making his dwar lower than it should be(since we know LF isn't the best spot for Cola) and of course if he is DH dwar doesn't change, while Smoak has been at 1b all year and rarely DH.
Most 1b are in the lineup for their bat and are the biggest players on the team. It's the position you're expected to have the most production from offensively other than outfielders or 3b , it's somewhat expected that they have the least range or are the the worst defensively of all the infielders in general. The other thing as well, the ball is hit up the middle more often than 1b, and yeah less opportunity to do something average other than a simple catch from an infielder, relay throw, or a bad throw in the firt they have to scoop.
