I guess it depends on your definition of short. If Price pitches like he has over the next 4 years and then regresses over the last 2-3, the surplus value he'd have generated over those 4 years will still significantly exceed the negative value he'll provide over the last 2.

If he remains elite for four years, sure. That is an awfully long way from guaranteed, however; most pitchers do not remain at the top of their game through age 34 anymore.

Fair enough. Although that doesn't quite make me feel good about this whole Happ thing.

What amuses me is that many Jays fans were actually thinking signing Price was even realistic.

The media has not been helping with that since August (see the OP for a perfect example).

I don't feel terribly good about the Happ thing, either. However, I think that there's a good chance that Happ doesn't come close to finishing out the deal here...it's a modest bet on Happ's production this year, and his chances of being a worthwhile asset thereafter.

Probably fairly recently. CFL and NLL are both sports.

In the 3 major sports, it would be Roger Clemens (1996).

Wasn't Hedo the "top free agent" when he signed with the Raptors?

Not even close. In fact the Raps let Shawn Marion, a superior player both before and after, leave as a free agent just to sign him.

I dont get how so many people believe in the raptors, they have zero to chance to win it all.

I'm sure that's what Colangelo sold him as, though.

I can't remember, were you pro or con on Colangelo?

We were a pretty good team with Matrix, and developed enough a winning culture that it allowed us to avoid the opportunity to select that scrawny kid from Davidson. Some team with more of a losing culture ended up drafting him.

As per the Boston Globe, Price just signed in Boston for 7/217. On my phone right now, I'm sure someone can find a link.

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly in agreement with David Price on a seven-year deal worth $217 million, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

Price will earn a reported $31 million per season over the life of the contract.

If you've followed the Jays long enough and knew Rogers, you knew it wasn't going to happen. In any major bidding war, Rogers always loses. That's if they even try.

Someone still asking why it wasn't realistic after he's gone is kinda amusing.
