He's a willing defender and a smart kid, but we have no idea what he can contribute if he can't develop into a go-to scorer - which is all he's shown he knows to date.
His defensive upside and positional versatility is something I'd bet on if forced to select at 5-6, but i'd be more comfortable moving down and drafting a player like Korkmaz and picking up another asset to try and trade back up to get Luwawu.
To me that duo is a better hedge than banking on Jaylen to be an elite offensive player. He and Murray are both pretty risky in that 5-8 range - easily could be low impact specialists.
Bill, I was curious to get your thoughts on Poetl?
Poetl is an interesting player. His agility for his size would be a big help to Boston's need for an interior defender with better size than our main rotation. He's not "long" per se, but he has excellent timing and defensive instincts. His feet and his head are his best attributes.
I don't know if he's going to be a plus rebounder or even a great shot-blocker in the NBA, but he will be a plus defender who'll hold his own on the glass. Offensively, he doesn't look like any type of high upside scoring threat and he hasn't really been asked - or shown - great range, so he is easiest to project as a rim-rolling, garbage man...what you see in college isn't always all there is to be seen however.
Around the basket he's been semi-inconsistent finishing plays, but I actually like his instincts down low and I think he may really surprise in this area over time once he's in the NBA and playing off of other players as a role player. I like his intent on most of his attempts at the basket and I think his footwork and body control allude to better results down the road if he is inclined to keep working at it.
In a PnR league, being smart, moving with purpose, and having the athleticism to do it with quickness can get a lot done. As his body continues to mature under NBA S&T work, I like what he can bring to a quality team.
Overall though, I think BOS has a need for:
- Scoring
- Rebounding
- Interior Defense
- Shooting
In that order. I'm not sure if Poetl is a significant upgrade to more than one of those 4 needs and I think there are many alternatives on the FA market to help improve the length and interior defense of the team.
I'm going to assume that the BKN pick will be traded to fill the scoring/rebounding need for now. I'd like the BOS/DAL/PHI/MIN picks to be packaged together in some combination to help get 2 players that will offset the potential loss of existing players:
- Hernangomez: 4/3 man, rebounding, shooting, scoring
- Korkmaz: 2 man, scoring, shooting
- Luwawu: 3/2 man, shooting and defense
