I very much doubt Morey is on the exit in Houston because Les Alexander is a patient owner who believes in family approach. He's different than the man he hires, just like Kraft and BB.
I'm writing this post because I wrote similar one when McHale was fired but decided not to post it.
The thing with Morey is that he's very hard to judge because of 3 factors:
a) he is the media-savviest GM in the league, he works hard on his image and propaganda, every reporter loves him
b) he had support of his owner to do long term building
c) he had two stars that broke down due to injuries, acquired two more, broke down due to character
d) Harden will still be a top 10 player in NBA on contract with Houston
But when you go with the bottom line business of Morey, you'll notice some major failures:
1) he had 3 contending seasons out of 9, that's not enough
2) he had two future All-stars, Dragić and Lowry, gave them up to sign Lin for a laaarge sum of money
3) his most valuable assets, DoMo and Jones, will expire this summer and Houston will either have to overpay or lose them
4) his best draftee, Parsons, was let go a year early because of the gamble he made
5) will probably lose Dwight Howard this off-season
At the end of the day, he still has Harden he actually acquired, who's a top 10 player. When you pinpoint Morey's important moves, there are about the same number of hits and misses, maybe even more hits. But at some point, he has to cluster hits to create a strong contender who can win the title and that's where Morey fails miserably.
2013-2015 he's always been 1 move away and that move never came to fruition. But he had enough bullets to shoot for something. He just never took the shot. And then the move he made, Lawson, was a complete cock-up.
What would have been if he held onto Dragić or Lowry?
