*12 of the 30 picks in the first round will be owned by four teams... Boston, Philadelphia, Denver, and Phoenix... Make it 13 if the Lakers slide out of the Top 3 and their pick goes to Philly... If you add the Raptors multi-picks in to the equation that's half of the 1st round being dominated by only five teams... Pretty ridiculous when you think of it. There's 11 (possibly 12) teams with a 2nd Rd pick or less in this years draft.
Interesting points.
- Boston needs to consolidate it's assets to get a bigger star like maybe a Blake Griffin
- Philadelphia can keep drafting young and see the cream rise to the top and then cut the rest.
- Denver no idea where they want to go.
- Phoenix have some good pieces and a few veterans, they can continue to draft young
This draft is not that strong so I can't see too many deals. It is crazy that the management of these teams chose to stockpile draft picks to get better. It's only working for Boston. Then again giving away draft picks for veterans didn't work for Brooklyn. But having the draft this way might see some key players drop because some of these teams might not have need to draft for that position. For instance Boston (get veteran big), Philadelphia and Denver might not have been for a pf causing Bender to slip.
You're right that the draft isn't strong. If your point of not many deals happening holds true, I would almost wonder if that many teams had that much foresight to trade out early?
On the other hand GM's always find a way to fall in love with a player and with so many teams shut out of the draft there does seem to be an awful amount of opportunity to grab a pick. What disappoints me is that I believe the Raps likely only want to bring in one rookie and are therefore looking to move a pick. With so many picks available in the market, they are likely to come pretty cheap at the draft...
You're bang on with Boston, and in my mind are ripe to be robbed just cause they have to make a deal... They own 8 picks in the draft!! That's a pretty big consolidation, and not one that gets done in one trade I would think.
Not sure I agree with your assessment of Philly. BC is already on record as saying having too much youth is problematic. I see him trying to get Saric over this offseason and adding the lotto pick (Two Rookies added max)... I think Philly hopes their Laker pick gets deferred till next year and wouldn't doubt the two picks they have on the 20s (Miami/OKC) will be made available
Utah & Phoenix both own 4 picks... Denver, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Orlando, and Atlanta all own 3 picks... A lot of friggin' picks for some teams and a lot of twiddling thumbs in other war rooms come draft unless an explosion of activity happens. Going to be interesting, that is for sure
